The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (Helen McMillian ward & Close Observation Unit) has opportunities for both new nurses transitioning into PICU and experienced critical care nurse. The PICU team recognises previous learning, training and experience. An individualised tailored orientation and transition into PICU for the experienced critical care nurse can be facilitated. If you are a new nurse PICU facilitates a 12 month Specialty Transition to Practice Program (STP) for nursing staff to enhance their current knowledge and skills in a supported environment as they transition to delivering high acuity nursing care to critically ill patients and their families. If you wish to begin the exciting journey into Intensive Care Nursing we welcome your application to the PICU STP. The program facilitates development and enhancement of knowledge and skills and provides strong foundational critical care knowledge through experiential learning, participation in specialty education and training opportunities and attainment of clinical competencies relevant to the PICU setting. This is achieved through; distinct periods of preceptored supernumerary time, engagement in knowledge and clinical skill attainment, active participation in themed study days (6) and demonstration of foundation critical care nursing knowledge and skill acquisition. The program aims for participants to acquire the knowledge and skills to recognize, assess and support the critically ill child whilst in PICU. Adult learning principles and professional pathways support the continuing professional development of all PICU nursing staff from the novice to experienced.This is facilitated by a nursing education team working a 7 day roster as well as a full complement of Intensive Care specialist staff with the nursing grades of; CNS, CNC, NUM, TNP and NP as well as the wider multidisciplinary PICU Team.What you’ll be doingThe Registered Nurse provides safe, compassionate, person-centred care to patients and families of Sydney Children’s Hospital Network.
The Registered Nurse acts as a role model by demonstrating behaviour and interacting with patients, their families and employees in a way that promotes a culture and standards that reflect the NSW Health CORE values of Collaboration, Openness , Respect and Empowerment.

  • Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Recent critical care experience and/or recent paediatric experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective time management skills
  • Computer literacy.
  • Capacity to work a seven (7) day rotating roster including public holidays and reasonable overtime.
