POSITION SUMMARY

The WA Intensive Care Training Pathway (WAICTP) is a networked training pathway open to current and future Intensive Care Medicine trainees in Western Australia. The Pathway enables trainees to complete the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) Training Program requirements in a streamlined fashion by providing access to training rotations, integrating training across tertiary, outer metropolitan and rural health services, and supporting individual education needs.

The Pathway does not replace the existing intensive care training process in WA. The Pathway provides prospective trainees with a structured approach to time based, rotational, assessment-based College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) requirements.

In 2025 the Pathway supports training rotations in the following hospitals:

  • Armadale Health Service
  • Fiona Stanley Hospital
  • Joondalup Health Campus
  • Perth Children’s Hospital
  • Rockingham General Hospital
  • Royal Flying Doctor Service (Jandakot Base)
  • Royal Perth Hospital
  • Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital
  • St John of God Midland Hospital
  • WACHS Albany Health Campus
  • WACHS Bunbury Hospital
  • WACHS Geraldton Health Campus

The WAICTP coordinates the selection process, appointments and rotations for trainees in Phase 0, Phase 1 and Phase 2 of training with the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). The combined selection process and appointment of positions for the Pathway is carried out by the WAICTP Selection Committee. Representatives from all participating hospitals directly involved in the recruitment of intensive care medicine trainees are members of the WAICTP Selection Committee. The recruitment pool is managed by WA Country Health Service with employment contracts issued based on training rotation allocations.

Training rotations available at the participating hospital’s provide access to mandatory training rotations and training time required by the CICM Training program while allowing trainees to gain a wide range of experiences in different hospital settings.
