Teacher – Big Picture

Job title: Teacher – Big Picture

Company: Government of Western Australia

Job description: This is a nine (9) month fixed term, part-time position (0.8FTE) commencing Term 2, 2024 with possible extension and/or permanency.

\

Halls Head College (HHC) are seeking to appoint an Advisory Teacher to work in their Big Picture Program and join their friendly school.

HHC Big Picture Academy consists of six Advisories spanning Year 8 to 12. Our Academy is a supportive learning community that encourages students and staff to achieve their potential through the approach of ‘one student at a time in a community of learners.’ Our students become responsible and active members of the community through a strong focus on the principles of the Big Picture design for education, encompassing academic excellence, development of social skills, emotional wellbeing, respect, and values.

We seek to engage young people in learning through implementing the Big Picture Education design which encourages all students to identify and pursue their interests and passions. We want to prepare our young people uncommonly well for post-school life and we start that by engaging students in the community through internships. We aim to be strongly connected with families. We do this each term through learning plan meetings and exhibitions. We have high expectations of each and every student to do the best they can and be the best they can be.

The successful applicant should be willing to share their interests, passions, and stories with the students. We are looking for a teacher who builds relationships and who is excited to find out what interests their students have, developing learning plans with each one and backward mapping the curriculum, documenting each and every student’s work and learning.

Those who are strongly encouraged to apply are teachers who are committed to helping each and every student believe that they matter; who can see and value each student’s culture, talents and interests; who can help them fit by changing the school and the classroom to suit individual needs and who can help students work around restrictions put on them. That is, those teachers who never give up on a student.

The Advisory is a small community within the school. You will work with these students each day. The Advisory is like an extended family. Students are expected to be respectful, caring and productive members of the Advisory group and the broader College. The Advisory Teacher’s role is to teach, inspire, provoke, bond, organise and manage learning. You would negotiate student learning plans, convene meetings with students, parents and mentors, help students develop extended projects and prepare for exhibitions.

Advisory Teachers take responsibility for student learning across the curriculum including literacy and numeracy. You would discover how a philosophy of combining personalised learning and working together – one student at a time in a community of learners, is the key to creating schools where students are engaged in meaningful learning, and where academic progress is measured against real world standards. This is transformative and makes a positive difference in the lives of these young people for years to come.

Further to this, the ability to develop the numeracy and/or literacy skills of lower secondary students and students at educational risk is highly desirable. The ability to critically analyse National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) data and the capacity to incorporate this knowledge into action plans to achieve meaningful student outcomes is also highly desirable.

Completion of the Big Picture training is desirable but not essential, as is any prior experience teaching within a Big Picture Academy. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the school to discuss the unique context of our Academy before submitting their application.

HHC is an Independent Public School, uniquely situated on the ‘island’ of Halls Head just south of Mandurah. The local intake area of HHC is south, close to the Waroona Shire boundary. The contributory primary schools are Glencoe, Halls Head, Falcon, South Halls Head and Ocean Road. The college provides a secondary education for students who live in the rapidly growing coastal strip, south of Mandurah.

The college is engaged in building more dynamic, engaging, and authentic learning opportunities for every student to build currency for life beyond and to reflect our motto ‘Learning for Life.’ Creating a learning environment for staff is also an important aspect that is being promoted at the college to ensure staff are engaged and immersed in learning. Our staff have a wealth of expertise, experience, and a genuine desire to constantly improve their practice to benefit all students.
