Job description: PURPOSE OF POSITION: U-Turn 180 is the youth programs department at Family Values For Life. The purpose is to support U-Turn 180’s 2025 Summer Reading Academy in the area of Reading Coach, supporting students in smaller-group settings. Reading coaches will use a diverse set of strategies and methods in an in person summer reading program. They will engage students, implement individualized lessons and support children’s reading and comprehension.Position: 20-22 hrs/wkHourly Rate: $18/hrSchedule: Monday – Thursday, 8AM – 3PM in person for the weeks of program (6/23 – 8/1 (SEASONAL)). Additional hours may be completed in person on site, or remotely from home. Additional required meeting hours will be scheduled with the full team based on availability. Training and onboarding may happen at fewer hours the week of 6/16, and a final debriefing about program may happen after 8/1. Trainings and debriefings will be compensated.Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Summer Reading Coach

Goal: To help students develop and increase reading skills that will contribute to their academic growth and foster their interest in reading.

  • Assist Reading Specialist in conducting pre/mid/post testing to determine student reading levels
  • Guide children through reading and writing activities virtually and in person.
  • Consult with Reading Specialist on at-home strategies to improve reading skills
  • Work with Reading Specialist(s) to implement the learning plans that are most appropriate for each child, either in 1-on-1 settings or with small groups.
  • Assist Lead in conducting mid-program review of summer reading academy
  • Weekly communication with coordinator and/or parents on student progress throughout summer.
  • Meet with reading coaches and specialists once a week to determine plans and strategies for small and large group as summer progresses
  • With approval from reading specialist, plan activities and mini-lessons that support student overall learning, at grade-appropriate levels
  • Other duties as assigned (As available)
  • Support U-Turn 180 Coordinators in large-org events as time allows

Education and Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience or education in early childhood development, child behavior, or teaching, and sensitivity in working with individuals, families and youth required.
  • Knowledge with community organizing, racial equity (especially African American and other communities of color), and cultural responsiveness.
  • Computer literacy, including knowledge of basic software applications, internet and email, and a willingness to develop additional skills as needed.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid ID and reliable transportation.
  • Must submit to a Criminal Background Study.
  • Must be able to work in the U.S.

Preferred Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Excellent meeting facilitation skills, including the ability to effectively present information to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Strong project planning and organizational competency required.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with graphic design and/or marketing and communications (Canva, Mailchimp)
  • Ability to manage various levels of student academic and social-emotional needs

Work Environment/Physical Demands/ScheduleWhile performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods and may be required to stand for an extended period. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position is required to work some evenings and occasional weekends.

Expected salary: $18 per hour
