The overall goal of the Boston Public Schools Acceleration Academy is to provide students with an opportunity to build academic and social emotional skills through a holistic programming model that includes 20+ hours of targeted small group instruction in ELA (February) and/or Math (April) as well as enrichment activities designed to extend the academic concepts being taught in core classes.The April Acceleration Academy will take place April 21-25, 2025 and will serve students who are identified as needing additional support to meet standards in ELA. Students will participate in approximately 26 hours of programming that includes 20+ hours of standards-aligned lessons in ELA as well as daily enrichment classes, breakfast, and lunch. Specific daily schedules will vary by school.Please note that the following schools will be running Acceleration Academies funded by the Expanded Learning Office. All qualified nurses are welcome to apply; however, preference will be given to nurses currently working at one of the selected schools.Sarah Greenwood, Madison Park Technical VHS, Young Achievers, Charlestown High School, Brighton High, Ruth Batson Academy, Shaw-Taylor, TechBoston Academy, and the Blackstone.Overview of Nurse Position: The Acceleration Academy Nurse will be part of the Acceleration Academy School Team. The school nurse will promote student wellness and assist in maintaining a healthy school environment during Acceleration Academies. The Nurse will provide skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students as well as medication administration during the April Acceleration Academy at the designated school site. Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff. If necessary, students are referred to their primary health care provider for an evaluation. For students with complex medical needs, the school nurse may act as a liaison for the school, home, and outside medical facilities. The nurse will work with the Site Coordinator and teachers to develop or implement existing health plans to allow students to participate in all Acceleration Academy educational and enrichment activities.RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Be available for students during Academy hours, which will run approximately 6.5 hours/day, 4 days a week at selected sites – hours may vary slightly depending on the specific site.
- Provide emergency medical care to students.
- Assess, monitor, and support all students with symptoms of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases within the AA following established protocols for SY24.
- Monitor and report all positive case clusters of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases within the AA following established protocols for SY24.
- Administer and/or supervise the administration of prescription medication to students.
- Counsel and/or educate students in small groups or as individuals concerning medical issues.
- Conducts formal and informal evaluations of medical conditions and develops accurate medical summaries on students.
- Develops and maintains contacts with medical persons or facilities who might provide direct service or consultation during the Acceleration Academy Week.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate record keeping and reporting formats and procedures.
- Maintains adequate and updated health records.
ResponsibilitiesPlanning
- Review files on students attending Acceleration Academy
- Identify which students have ongoing medical needs and become familiar with the specifics of the medical condition
- Create medication distribution plan
- Have a planning session with the site coordinator prior to the start of the program
Collaboration and Evaluation
- Submit end of program deliverables
- Participate in mandatory feedback/debrief activities
Schedule:Pre-Academy: Pre-planning with site coordinatorThe Acceleration Academy day will run for approximately 6.5 hours per day for 4 days (April 18th-21st, 2025), for a total of approximately 26 hours each Academy week. Nurses are required to be available during all of the Acceleration Academy hours. Program start and end times vary by school.Post-Academy: “Wrap-up” duties occur at the end of Academy programming.Qualifications:
- Currently employed as a Boston Public School nurse
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse
- MA State Dept. of Education School Nurse License (All Levels)
- CPR & First Aid Certification
- Ability to meet the BPS Standards of Effective Practice as outlined above
- Experience working with children and adolescents in public school/agency/human services setting
- Current authorization to work in the United States – Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
