The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists within Paediatric and Reproductive Genetics Unit to join the team as an AHP3 Senior Genetic Counsellor working in a part time capacity, for 12 months from commencement, with possibility for extension for the right applicant.

In the role of the Senior Genetic Counsellor, you will use specialist knowledge to provide genetic counselling, referral of patients to specialist practitioners, consent patients for genomic testing, contribute to reports and participate in research activities. You will be the key contact person for recruiting families into the NewbornsInSA research study and advising families of findings from genomic newborn screening.

The NewbornsInSA project is an MRFF-funded clinical translational research study to explore new models of genomic newborn screening. This research will employ a combination of untargeted metabolomic screening and whole-genome sequencing to identify newborns at risk of a genetic disease, perform confirmatory diagnostic testing and initiate early intervention. Our team of clinical investigators will ensure new diagnoses are translated into improved patient care and outcomes. Stakeholder engagement and health economic assessments are further components of this research. This is an ambitious forward-looking research project with the potential to change neonatal care pathways in South Australia and beyond.

This position is based at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and will work across multiple sites, including the Genetics and Molecular Pathology Department of SA Pathology and other sites within the SA Health network. This position would suit a Senior Genetic Counsellor who is looking to further advance their research and genomics skills.
