The individual in this role will facilitate environmental, health and safety tasks and improvements, and maintain appropriate records of evidence of compliance with applicable regulations and standards. This role requires proven knowledge of OSHA and other general industry regulations and requirements, and the soft skills necessary to build productive and trusted relationships with employees. Under the direction of the Director of Quality and Safety, the Senior EHS Specialist I will foster a culture where the work environment and employees’ health and safety come first.Duties/Responsibilities:General:Develop and implement processes and procedures to ensure compliance with company policies, ISO standards, and regulatory requirements, including federal, state, and local legislation pertaining to EHS.Facilitate periodic facility and equipment assessments of an environmental and/or safety nature and provide feedback and opportunities for improvement to area management.Partner with area management on EHS improvements throughout the facility.Chair the internal Safety Committee, facilitate monthly meetings, and direct assignments to members.Stay current with industry best practices and regulatory changes to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.Participate on the North America EHS Council, and complete cross-organizational projects, as assigned.Manage inventory and procurement of safety equipment, PPE, and first aid supplies.Occupational Safety:Apply knowledge of ISO 45001 and OSHA General Industry standards to train employees and continually build and improve safety systems.Lead the recording, investigations, and countermeasures of safety incidents.Manage safety changes (MOC) to assess and document impact and risk.Represent Safety on committees and projects related to new product design and development, assessing safety risk, applying that knowledge to FMEA activities, and advising on improvements and countermeasures.Coordinate and schedule preventive maintenance for facility equipment (e.g., forklifts, crane, dock, material lift).Environmental:Manage onsite chemical inventory and safety data sheet library, ensuring records and reporting are up to date.Liaise with stakeholder departments to coordinate ordering of chemicals, pickup of chemical waste, and receipt of chemicals from customer sites.Apply knowledge of ISO 14001 to train employees and build controls around environmental impact.Collaborate with AKBA’s Sustainability Lead on related projects.Manage hazardous waste disposal and ensure proper handling and storage of hazardous materials.Additional duties/responsibilities:Support the Sustainability Lead with sustainability projects, as neededOther projects, as assignedQualifications/Requirements:Bachelor’s degree (Preferably in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field)5-8 years of experience successfully managing EHS activities in a manufacturing/industrial settingOSHA 30-Hour TrainingStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to conduct thorough investigations and develop effective solutionsBasic familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 quality management system requirementsProven experience with OSHA and EPA regulationsWorking knowledge of hazardous chemical properties, safe handling, and storageExceptional written and verbal communication skillsFamiliarity with a broad range of skills/tools to analyze problems and determine root causesStrong, collaborative problem-solving skillsMastery of MS-Office software toolsPreferred Skills:ASP or CSP certificationExperience working with a safety or environmental management system (e.g. – ISO 14001, ISO 45001)Experience with aspects of equipment used in biopharmaceutical production preferredFamiliarity with ETQ QMS softwarePrior experience safely operating machinery such as forklift, overhead crane, general power toolsExperience with laboratory safety requirements and proceduresPhysical Demands/Environmental Conditions:Ability to work onsite, in a manufacturing environment, 5 days a weekAbility to tolerate walking/standing for extended periods of time, up to 3 hours, to perform facility assessmentsAbility to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. unassistedOccasional exposure to pressurized and motorized equipment, chemical solutions, and industrial powered vehicles, requiring appropriate personal protective equipment (provided)Occasional travel to sister companies for EHS-related activities, 1-2 times per yearThe base compensation range for this role is $80,000-$90,000.
