Job description: About the role
You will be the key source of communications support for the City of Greater Geelong’s Mayor and Councillors. You’ll provide strategic communications, media advice and produce a range of communications materials to help inform the community about Council decisions and build the reputation of our elected representatives.

Work type: Permanent, full-time
Classification: Band 7 ($100,064 – $110,990)

Key responsibilities include:

  • Writing speeches and presentations for the Mayor and Councillors to deliver during public engagements.
  • Attending official events and activities involving the City’s Mayor and Councillors, to provide communications support and gather content for the City’s social media channels.
  • Managing media enquiries relating to the Mayor and Councillors, including arranging interviews, providing media briefing notes and offering strategic advice to assist in handling challenging media issues.
  • Liaising with the Corporate Communications team on media enquiries requiring organisational input, as the conduit to the Mayor and Councillors.
  • Proactively organising media opportunities featuring the Mayor and Councillors, targeting earned media and as content for the City’s owned channels.
  • Managing the ‘Geelong Mayor’ social media channels, with a focus on showcasing the Mayor and Councillors in the community.
  • Leading the communication of key decisions from the Council’s monthly meetings.
  • Assisting the Mayor and Councillors with strategic public relations advice.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will be a versatile writer, able to distil often complex subjects into clear and concise messaging suitable for a broad audience. Written communications will include media releases, speeches, media briefing notes, newspaper columns, social media posts, and any other relevant material.

You’ll have sound news sense and political nous, with the ability to form strong working relationships and the confidence to deliver strategic communications advice at an executive level.

Essential Experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in journalism, communications, media, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success liaising with internal and external stakeholders to plan and manage communications on complex issues.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the political machinations of executive government at local, state or federal levels – and highly developed ‘nous’.
  • Demonstrated experience undertaking research to prepare accurate, clear and timely written materials.
  • High level writing skills, including experience in speechwriting.
  • Demonstrated success managing social media channels.
  • Experience managing multiple projects concurrently to meet non-negotiable deadlines.
  • Experience providing strategic communications and media advice at an executive level.
  • Skills and experience in digital communications (e.g. photography, video editing, and web content authoring and management) would be desirable.
  • Awareness of the major issues and opportunities for the City of Greater Geelong and the Geelong region (desirable).
  • Experience working in a government environment (desirable).
