- Project Details: Existing coal power plant converting to natural gas. Burns is the EPC. Would be working as the Electrical Contractors Site Safety rep
- Start Date: Mid March
- Duration: 3 years
- Location: Oak Creek, WI (20 min from Milwaukee, WI)
- Per Diem: $220, 7 days week
- Pay Ray: $55/hr flexible depending on experience
- Qualifications: Electrical and Power Plant Safety experience
Job DescriptionThe Safety Specialist will report to the Corporate Safety Director and will be responsible for educating field personnel on correct safety procedures and ensuring that safety policies are followed. This role includes conducting site safety audits, investigating incidents, creating and conducting training sessions, and maintaining all required safety signage. The Safety Specialist will also play a key role in operational planning to eliminate hazards and ensure safe work practices.Responsibilities
- Ensure that the intent of company policies, procedures, and quality standards is followed.
- Conduct site safety audits to recognize and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Prescribe corrective actions and measures for recurring issues identified in audits.
- Develop training sessions based on audit findings.
- Investigate all incidents and generate proper reports.
- Aid in accident/incident investigations as needed.
- Create, conduct, and document Tool Box Talks.
- Provide task training as planned and needed.
- Ensure and maintain all required signage is properly posted.
- Stop work to remedy serious or life-threatening safety deficiencies, violations, or unsafe practices.
- Complete and file disciplinary actions with documentation.
- Provide leadership with a focus on safe work practices and pre-task planning.
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating effectively with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
- Assist in planning and implementing all project safety needs.
- Actively participate in operational planning to eliminate hazards.
- Monitor safety portions of operational plans and work with the foreman to correct any issues.
- Investigate and procure new task-specific safety systems/equipment and educate crews and superintendents as needed.
- Conduct on-site inspections and control hazardous working conditions or unsafe employee activities through teaching and coaching.
- Reward and recognize field personnel for outstanding safety initiatives.
- Attend and actively participate in daily morning huddles with job crews and daily end-of-shift meetings when possible.
- Educate foremen on proper daily work plans and job hazard analysis procedures, holding them accountable.
- Assist with or lead weekly safety meetings.
- Continue education regarding safety through seminars, meetings, and higher education experiences.
- Network, communicate, and remain current on safety topics and relevant issues in the construction industry.
- Perform additional duties as directed by supervisors.
Essential Skills
- 5+ years of industrial construction safety experience as a full-time safety representative.
- Experience supporting industrial electrical scopes of projects.
- Preferred experience in power plant construction.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related field is preferred.
- Certifications such as ASP, GSP, SMS, CHST, STS, CIH, CSP are immediately acceptable.
- Other acceptable certifications include First Aid Certified, OSHA 30 Construction, United Academy train-the-trainer certifications, OSHA 40 Hazwoper, OSHA 500, and certifications from organizations like CEST, NCCER.
Work EnvironmentThis role involves working under a general contractor on a Power Plant Construction project, converting a coal plant to natural gas. The Safety Specialist will work with union electricians in a mix of in-plant and job trailer settings. The position requires training workers on plant protocols and actively participating in operational planning. The work environment includes a reputable contractor with existing safety policies and procedures.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 – $50.00/hr.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
