The selected candidate will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive safety program for the department. This includes an in-depth knowledge of safety and environmental health to assist management with the development and planning of policies, programs, and procedures that supports a positive and successful safety culture across the department.Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in safety management, occupational health and safety, environmental safety, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of safety experience and/or training.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Safety certification (GSP, ASP, SSH, CSHO, SHEP or equivalent)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to know, understand, interpret and apply federal, state and local regulations
  • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor (Red Cross) within 1 year of hire

The Safety Officer job responsibilities include:

  • Conducts and provides research into safety training requirements and assists with the development of effective safety and health training. Assists with planning the efficient delivery of value-added safety training throughout the department.
  • Plan, develop and implement safety programs/policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT), Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and related organizations;
  • Provide specialized training and assessments to employees and department operations; and perform a variety of administrative tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility
  • Monitor safety program on all projects to ensure contractors, subcontractors and other third-party personnel are in compliance with the contractual obligations related to the requirements.
  • Conduct random safety audits and inspections of all department work locations; prepare technical reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented;
  • Oversee the Accident Review Board Committee, conduct post-incident investigations and prepare reports identifying possible accident causes and hazards for use by City employee and senior management;
  • Assist in the development, evaluation and upgrading of safety programs for the department; Prepare safety statistical and safety training reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis

Working Conditions:Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions.Physical Demand:Sedentary Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
