Are you passionate about public transit and want to make a real impact on the lives of commuters in the Portland community? We are currently seeking motivated and enthusiastic interns to join our Transportation division and help us provide safe, efficient, and reliable transportation to our riders.
As an intern with our Transportation team, you’ll have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that directly impact our operations and improve the quality of service we provide. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals who are dedicated to helping you develop your skills and achieve your career goals.
You will be involved in enhancing rules compliance and hazard risk rankings within Rail Transportation (RT). Your objectives include continuously improving RT’s hazard risk ranking system by identifying trends and analyzing rule violations. You will develop a process for ranking and re-ranking hazards, identifying mitigation strategies, and presenting these to management. Your role also involves collaborating with an TriMet manager for guidance. Deliverables include refining the hazard risk ranking process in alignment with the Agency Safety Plan (ASP) and adapting the Rail rule violation policy accordingly.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers’ experiences and of TriMet’s product and service offerings.
Essential Functions
- Work closely with project stakeholders to ensure tasks and deliverables are completed on-time.
- Attend meetings in support of Agency Goals and Objectives.
- Provide support for ongoing projects including the use of spreadsheet software (MS Excel/Smart sheet) for scheduling, tracking and reporting on progress.
- Write, edit, and design material for rules, procedures, and instructions.
- Create PowerPoint content for goals tracking or internal distribution (flat screens etc.)
- Write, edit, and design employee notifications.
- Document management on collaborative platforms.
Position Requirements
Must be a current Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student in a relevant discipline such as Public Administration, Transportation/Logistics, Transportation/Urban Planning, Technical Writing, or a related discipline. Grads who have completed their degrees in the past 12-month period will also be considered.
Strong MS office skills; specifically outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
We’re looking for candidates with a passion for public transit or service, and improving mobility for our riders in the Portland metro!
Type of Position / Grade / FLSA
Non-Exempt, Non-Union, Full-Time (40 hours/week), Temporary. Internships will run May/June through August/September.
Wage
Interns will be paid $21/hour
