Job description: Townsville Hospital and Health Service is the public healthcare provider for more than 250,000 people across a geographic area of 150,000km2, delivering a comprehensive range of services across 21 facilities, from primary care in regional locations to highly specialised care at the main hospital.
Townsville University Hospital, located adjacent to one of Queensland’s leading tertiary institutions, James Cook University, is the largest tertiary hospital in northern Australia, providing specialist referral services for 700,000 people living from Mackay, to the Torres Strait, to the Northern Territory border.
The Public Affairs Officer undertakes integral media liaison, proactive external and internal communications, complex event management and key stakeholder engagement.

What’s on offer?
Two positions available. 1 x Permanent Full-time + 1 x Fixed Term Temporary Full-time up to 12 months (with the possibility of extension up to 30/09/2026).
Remuneration package of up to $127,236 p.a., comprising base salary range of $102,492 – $111,516 p.a. (AO5), recreational leave loading (17.5%), and employer contribution to superannuation (12.75%).

About the role
- Lead proactive, positive media engagement and communications across the Townsville HHS, including all rural and community sites.
- Innovate and manage the organisation’s social media platforms, including monitoring trends, analysing performance, creating, and scheduling content campaigns and developing strategies to improve capabilities to extend and optimise target reach.
- Strategically plan and execute high-level organisational events on behalf the Townsville HHS Executive and Board in line with the health service’s events and marketing calendar and as otherwise required.
Skills and experience
- Planning and implementing positive, proactive media strategies.
- Design and execute high-level events with significant reputational stake.
- High-level written communication, specifically for a media and social media environment, and desktop publishing skills.
- Work to tight deadlines and meet high quality standards.
- High-level organisational skills.
- Work autonomously, prioritise workload and meet deadlines in a high-output, dynamic environment.
Role requirements
- While not mandatory, a relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, multi-media studies, communications, and/or public relations would be highly regarded.
- Proficiency in Adobe Indesign CS6 or other relevant design suite would be well regarded.
