GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, under the Attorney General’s Office, seeks qualified applicants for a Staff Instructor. The successful applicant will join the professional team of six (6) full-time Instructors at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy. Staff Instructors are certified law enforcement officers with the State of Wyoming. They perform a variety of tasks instructing, implementing, and managing general law enforcement topics, including formal classroom assignments and practical exercises in one or more of the following areas: Custody & Control, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Firearms, Physical Training, Use of Force, Patrol or Detention Exercises, and others as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Utilize approved methods and materials to instruct law enforcement personnel at the

Academy and regional training programs in general law enforcement topics to include specific areas of expertise (Custody & Control, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Firearms, Physical Training (PT), Applied Patrol and Detention Exercises, and Use of Force). * Supervise students during class and after hours.

  • Handle disciplinary infractions by direct action or referral.
  • Write evaluations on students, guest instructors, and course content based on observation of students, instructor performance, and written critiques.
  • Maintain and direct the distribution and recovery of student training materials and inventory.
  • Prepare, review, and revise existing lesson plans.
  • Research and develop new course content by analyzing and utilizing available resource materials in addition to professional experience.
  • Implement approved course curriculum changes.
  • Preview audiovisual materials, read publications, and attend training courses to enhance professional skills and instructional techniques.
  • Make budget-related recommendations and monitor program-related expenditures
  • Responsible for the State and Agency inventory of supplies and equipment in specified areas.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants who are Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy certified Custody & Control Instructors or have defensive tactics instructor experience.
Preference may be given to candidates with a degree in police science/criminal justice plus six years as a law enforcement officer, including four years with responsibility for classroom training or on-the-job instruction.
Preference may be given to applicants who are currently POST Instructor certified.
Preference may be given to applicants who are Wyoming Peace and/or Detention Officer certifiable.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Skill in instructional techniques, research, and development.

  • Skill in police and detention procedures and tactics, including using motor vehicles and physical motor skills to demonstrate and actively participate in physical skills such as fitness, custody control, and firearms instruction.
  • Knowledge of Federal and Wyoming statutes applicable to law enforcement training methods, techniques, and practices.
  • Knowledge of effective techniques of instruction in adult learning principles.
  • Knowledge of the division’s mission, goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the agency budget process.
  • Knowledge as a subject matter expert in one or more law enforcement topics.
  • Ability to effectively pass on the knowledge and skills which are required.
  • Ability to perform consistently and effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to work with students who have varying abilities and experiences.
  • Ability to organize and manage time and resources.
  • Ability to consistently and accurately evaluate program and personnel/students.
  • Ability to drive and travel throughout the state.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class C Wyoming driver’s license.
  • Ability to work with common office technology, computers, and communications systems

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Education)

Experience:

0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with at least two years of law enforcement experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

P.O.S.T. certification, or ability to obtain P.O.S.T. certification within one year of employment.

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with at least 5 years of law enforcement experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

P.O.S.T. certification, or ability to obtain P.O.S.T. certification within one year of employment.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to drive and travel throughout the state
  • Prolonged standing while teaching

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Exempt
  • The agency requires that employees successfully pass an annual competency test to use force, a quarterly competency test for firearms, and a semi-annual physical fitness test.
  • The agency requires that employees have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class C Wyoming driver’s license, as statewide travel is required.
  • Successful applicants must pass a background investigation before an offer is made.
