The Production Manager, reporting to the Sr Journals Production Manager, plays a pivotal role in advancing PNAS’s journal production strategy, ensuring continuous improvement, innovation, and efficiency among production staff and supplier partners. The Production Manager oversees quality, vendor, and project management for the PNAS portfolio, playing a key role in translating strategy, policy, and goals into day-to-day business-as-usual (BAU) activities. This position entails management responsibilities for the production staff and involves supervising and directing routine support functions.

Job Description:

Scope of Work

Vendor Management:

Manages overall vendor quality, oversees joint client/vendor projects, and serves as the client-side product owner for production systems and tools.

Evaluates and, with the Assistant Production Manager (APM), tracks vendor performance, collaborating with senior managers to find sustainable solutions.

Assists in supplier RFPs and selection processes, including leading demonstrations and conducting interviews.

Quality Management:

Ensures content meets or exceeds established quality standards, managing the author proof feedback process and acting as the first point of escalation for content-related quality issues.

Provides language editing, proofreading, and quality checking services for portfolio content.

Oversees freelance activities, including finding and coordinating work among freelancers.

Project Management:

Leads project management for departmental projects, including initialization, documentation, and staff resourcing.

Assists in cross-departmental projects and provides training and documentation to production staff members responsible for BAU execution of the project.

Staff Management and Team Development:

Manages three or more members of the staff, oversees and evaluates employee contribution, performance, and development.

Administers annual performance reviews, sets appropriate goals aligned with departmental and organizational strategies, and fosters a culture of respect and collaboration.

Ensures appropriate workload distribution across different team members, working collaboratively with the APM to meet departmental needs.

Miscellaneous

Collaborates with managers cross-functionally, including Editorial, Media, Subscriptions, Finance, Marketing, and Digital Products and Platforms, to address issues and questions related to production matters.

Specific Tasks

Vendor Management and Production Workflow

Proactively and independently manages overall vendor performance, including quality, schedule adherence, responsiveness, communication.

Works to anticipate, understand, and address supplier performance failures.

In partnership with APM and senior managers, develops and administers get-well or improvement plans for vendor performance as needed.

Identifies process improvement needs and collaborates with stakeholders and managers to develop and execute continuous improvement plans.

Works closely with vendor-side staff and managers to oversee joint client/vendor projects.

Serves as the client-side product owner for production management systems and technology tools.

Evaluates and tracks vendor performance, in partnership with APM, collaborates with senior managers for solutions.

Quality Management:

Serves as in-house expert for copyediting quality across all PNAS content. Establishes copyediting quality benchmarks and manages vendor and freelancer performance to meet required quality standards.

Provides language editing, proofreading, and quality checking services for portfolio content.

Manages style guides for articles, electronic deliveries, and internal documents.

Manages author feedback process and acts as the first and continuing point of escalation for quality issues related to content.

Performance KPIs

Manages performance to meet KPIs, proactively works to anticipate, understand, and mitigate missed targets.

Project Management:

Provides project management leadership for departmental projects, maintaining project databases, and assisting in cross-departmental projects.

Staff Management and Team Development:

Manages three or more members of the staff, overseeing and evaluating employee contribution, performance, and development.

Miscellaneous

Partners cross-functionally with Editorial, Media, Front Matter, and Digital Products and Platforms to develop and manage workflow and manuscript throughput.

Collaborates with Subscriptions and Finance teams to monitor and manage expenses and budget.

Works with Marketing team members to produce internal and external publication collateral.

Advises all units on production best practices and production requirements.

Job Specifications:

In-depth and direct technical knowledge of production and publication processes.

Excellent copyediting skills, including a fluent understanding of CSE Style and Format and Chicago Manual of Style.

Excellent project management skills with a proven track record of successful project execution.

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving ability with experience using workflow management systems and case management software.

Direct offshore vendor management experience, including negotiation skills.

People and team management experience with the ability to lead and support teams through change.

Highly effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree.

Six years of progressively responsible journal production experience, including two years in a supervisory/management capacity.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Director/Senior Manager. General direction is provided. Supervises assigned staff.

Work Environment: Telecommute environment, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.

Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $85,040 – $116,930. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range.
