What you’ll be doing

The Principal Aboriginal Health Worker (PAHW) position is part of the SHG Operations supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients through their hospital journey . The position also provides education, preventative health awareness, chronic disease and other health related issues, and programs to the Aboriginal Community.

The PAHW will direct all aspects of this project including: building collaborative partnerships with internal and external; health care service providers across the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) specifically Shoalhaven; to increase access to health treatment and prevention services and to improve patient journey and outcomes.

The PAHW will ensure provision of cultural support to AHWs across ISLHD. This role will include assisting other AHWs (incl. Aboriginal Health Practitioners) to develop relevant skills to deliver quality services.

The PAHW will also support and develop models of care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to ensure safe and culturally appropriate specialised care and referral processes. The PAHW and other AHWs play a key role in combating the high burden of disease and mortality rates in Aboriginal communities by working within a primary health care framework to achieve better health outcomes and better access to health services. This will include community development and capacity building with other health services within ISLHD and non-ISLHD Health services. The PAHW advises and supports actions in the Strategic Direction of Closing the Gap initiatives.

The PAHW plays a key pivotal role in the SHG Aboriginal Health Advisory Group.

Selection Criteria: * Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent ( applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW) and a demonstrated ability to effectively and sensitively liaise and communicate with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and agencies.

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a health promotion, public health, or clinical discipline, and/or extensive work related experience.
  • Demonstrated application of health promotion principles and skills in planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion programs and activities (relating to improving the health and well-being of priority populations and building healthier places).
  • Demonstrated effective organisational skills including managing competing priorities, problem solving and an ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team as well as independently to deliver agreed outcomes.
  • Demonstrated development of partnerships and relationships across health services/ teams focused on quality improvement and capacity building to implement an Aboriginal health initiative.
  • Demonstrated skills in delivery of Aboriginal primary health care, client assessment, referral and advocacy, and an ability to provide clinical supervision and cultural support, and leadership to Aboriginal Health Workers.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, and computer skills with an ability to maintain accurate records in appropriate clinical and/or non-clinical information systems, collate data to develop project planning and evaluation reports.
  • Current drivers licence Class C and ability and willingness to travel within the LHD for work purposes.
