The City of Grand Junction sponsors the Police Officer Recruit while he or she completes the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certified Basic Academy program through Western Colorado Community College in Grand Junction, CO. After successful completion of the POST Academy, Certified Police Officers are moved to an entry pay rate of $38.05 hourly while completing a 16 week Field Training Officer (FTO) Program with the Grand Junction Police Department. Upon successful completion of the FTO Program, recruits are released to solo patrol as a Sworn Police Officer.

About the Grand Junction Police Department:

At the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD), we are committed to enhancing community safety, reducing fear of crime, and elevating the quality of life through partnerships and innovative policing initiatives. The GJPD provides a full range of high quality policing services found in few departments our size including traffic unit, investigations, K-9, bomb squad, crime lab, university campus policing, SWAT team, drug task force and other collateral assignments.

Duties

What You’ll Do: As a Recruit –

Attend, participate, and successfully complete a POST certified police academy. * Pass all required classes, scenarios, physical training, and other assigned duties and tasks
As a GJPD Police Officer –

Patrol assigned areas within City limits. * Respond to radio dispatch calls for investigation of breaches of the peace and citizen complaints

  • Perform preliminary and initial investigations at scenes
  • Prepare citations and summonses
  • Make arrests and transport individuals
  • Appear in court to offer testimony relative to the investigation of incidents
  • Prepare a variety of reports and records
  • Offer assistance to citizens

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • Good physical condition
  • Minimum of 21 years of age, as of date of hire
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid Colorado driver license
  • Good moral character (past criminal activity may be disqualifying – see notice below)
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays

Testing Process:

  • Telephone Interview

  • Oral Board Interview
  • Suitability Evaluation
  • Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA)
  • Finger Prints/Background Investigation
  • Executive Interview
  • Pre-employment drug, medical, and psychological evaluation screening

Recruitment Timeline:
*Please note that each step is contingent upon successful completion of the prior step. This is a tentative timeline that is subject to change.

  • Phone interviews will start the week of February 12, 2024, the last week of phone interviews will be April 8, 2024.
  • Three physical ability/testing weeks available (applicants will pick one to attend):
  • March 4th – 7th
  • April 1st – 4th
  • April 29th – May 2nd

Testing weeks include, physical ability testing, written exercise, oral board interviews, suitability interviews and testing, and Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA).

  • Executive interview dates tentatively scheduled the weeks of:
  • April 22nd – 26th
  • May 20 – 24th
  • June 17th – 21st
  • All final offers for the August 2024 Academy, will be tentatively extended no later then June 30, 2024 (earlier applicants could receive final offers prior to this date.)

While a critical admission may or may not disqualify an applicant from a job, discovery of misleading or deceitful information provided by the applicant is immediate cause for disqualification.

  • Any felony investigation or conviction
  • Any conviction for a crime of violence, specifically assaults, domestic violence, etc.
  • Any conviction for a “hate crime” such as ethnic intimidation
  • Perjury conviction
  • Any theft conviction regardless of value of item
  • Theft from current employer or a previous employer
  • Drug use (including marijuana) and/or current alcohol abuse
  • An alcohol or drug conviction including but not limited to DUI/DWAI, depending on recency
  • Hit and run accident conviction
  • Being under or having been under driving restraint, cancelation, suspension or revocation of driving privileges in Colorado or any other state
