The Police Department prides itself on providing a level of service that is unsurpassed. Each member of the Department is expected to live up to a unique “Statement of Values.” As a police officer, you will be responsible for a variety of law enforcement activities involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the prevention and investigation of crimes, and the maintenance of order in designated areas during an assigned shift.

Police Officers participate in 4/10 and 3/12.5 work-week schedules and must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays. There is an 18-month probationary period, and this position is represented by the Emeryville Police Officers Association (EPOA).

Examples of Duties

As a Police Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Answering and responding to calls for service
  • Protecting life and property
  • Making arrests
  • Enforcing federal, state, and local traffic laws and ordinances
  • Preventing and investigating crimes
  • Patrolling designated area(s) during an assigned shift on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or by patrol car
  • Performing crime prevention and community relations activities to ensure high-level of service to residents

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate would:

  • Read, understand, interpret, and apply department policies, rules, laws, and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement work
  • Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports
  • Observe and accurately recall places, names, descriptive characteristics, and facts of incidents
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Use good judgment in emergency or critical situations
  • Identify and address issues, problems, and opportunities
  • Work effectively, even when under stress or experiencing conflict
  • Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing
  • Be of good moral character

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Citizenship status must be conferred within three (3) years of applying for citizenship.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent with related college work
  • Be at least 21 years of age by the appointment date
  • Possess a valid California Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record (this is an ongoing requirement)
  • Free of felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions which mandate weapons restrictions
  • Have uncorrected vision of at least 20/100 in each eye or corrected to 20/30
  • Possess normal color vision and hearing
  • Free from physical, emotional, or medical conditions which might adversely affect the ability to successfully do the job

Academy Graduate:
Must have successfully graduated from a POST approved Law Enforcement Academy at the time of application. Academy graduates must have graduated within three (3) years or have a requalification certificate dated within the last three (3) years or possess qualifying service time which would extend the three (3) year period.

Lateral:
Must have a POST Basic certificate or higher and not have been separated for more than three (3) years from a law enforcement position in the State of California.

Supplemental Information

Compensation:
The City provides the following benefits package to Police Officers:

  • Salary Range: $10,304 to $12,296 monthly
  • Education Incentive: 5% or 7.5% dependent upon certification or college degree.
  • Retirement: Classic Members – 3% @ 55 (based on highest average annual compensation earnable during any 36-month period of employment); Employee pays the 9%-member contribution plus cost-sharing of 5%, totaling 14%. New Members– 2.7% @ 57 PERS Plan (based on highest three consecutive years and Level III Survivor Benefits plan). Employee pays the 14.50%-member contribution. The City does not participate in Social Security.
  • Vacation: 0 – 4 years of service 80 hours; 5 – 9 years of service 120 hours; 10 – 20 years of service 160 hours; 21+ years 200 hours (Credit may be provided for prior years of relevant service with another public safety agency in setting initial vacation tier placement for lateral police officers).
  • Holidays: Thirteen (13) paid holidays per year.
  • Sick Leave: Three (3) weeks per year, with unlimited accumulation.
  • Shift Differential: 4% for hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
  • Uniform Allowance: $1,400 annually
  • Health & Welfare: Medical, dental, and vision care coverage paid by the agency (to a capped amount) for the employee and eligible dependents.
  • Misc. Benefits: City provides Life/AD&D, chiropractic, and employee assistance program benefits
  • Specialty Incentives: Canine Officers 5% and Field Training Officers 6%
  • Longevity Pay: up to 6%
  • Detective Pay: 3%
