Shift and Status: Full time, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Summary

Performs a variety of patient access functions to review, process, and ensure timely completion of referrals to follow-up specialty outpatient care/services. Ensures completion of referral process for multiple services referred by assigned area (Pediatrics or Adult Medicine) by obtaining and verifying information from patients in accordance with system policies and procedures. Ensures positive interactions with patients, family members, medical staff, third party representatives, and health system personnel. Promotes good customer service in the work environment. Effectively utilizes all computer systems to ensure that the responsibilities of the Referral Management and Access Department are met.

Essential Functions

  • Schedules complex appointments, incoming/outgoing referrals, surgeries, tests, including medical record review of incoming referrals. Builds provider schedule template. Manages multiple calls (Incoming/Outgoing) and phone queue technology. Navigate external patient referral portals. Responsible for complex patient problem solving. Navigates specialty testing requirements (Imaging / Testing / Labs). Completes referral triage and chart review, as necessary.
  • Verifies current patient demographic, insurance, and financial data; enters and/or updates all pertinent information into the registration and billing systems in a timely manner.
  • Performs scanning (HIM Knowledge) – incoming referrals. Sends (Mail / Email / MyHealth) Patient Documentation (New Patient Letters). Information Systems: Maintains knowledge and effectively utilizes multiple computer information systems (e.g., registration, scheduling, revenue cycle, patient care, patient tracking and Web based on-line eligibility systems) to determine status of pending referrals, schedule appointments, answer questions and resolve problems for patients, providers, and third-party payers.
  • Obtains insurance authorizations and/or verifies that prior authorization has been obtained or proper insurance participation exists.
  • Effectively tracks and/or documents all service interactions with customers within appropriate systems according to guidelines.
  • Works with manager, physician, and other staff to create for the patient/family an experience that exemplifies caring, understanding, efficiency and overall quality of service. Demonstrates the ability to balance customer service with the financial needs of the health system.

  • Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree or equivalent, Required.
  • 2 years of relevant experience, in related experience required.
  • Computer Skills, required.
  • Active listening and communication skills, required.
  • Knowledge and use of community resources; social, health and public agencies and services, preferred.
  • CRT-Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA) – AAMA, preferred.
  • LIC-License Practical Nursing (LPN) – STATE_MI, preferred.
  • LIC-Paramedic License – STATE_MI, preferred.
  • Ability to speak English well enough to understand and be understood by customers and co-workers (based on Corewell Health entity and department as appropriate), required.
  • Ability to discern patient data and patient needs as directed. Focused on positive patient outcomes in balance with enterprise values and guidelines (based on Corewell Health entity and department as appropriate) along with matching the right patient with the right provider, required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills. Time management and organizational skills. Self-directed. Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes, and multiple interruptions. Ability to maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality. Ability to listen to others. Competency in the use of a variety of computer hardware and software systems.
