Job description: Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Managing Director to oversee our pipeline of HCZ Promise Academy After School and community programs, which include our Promise Academy I & II K-12 Afterschool and summer programs, athletics, and the HCZ Armory.The Managing Director will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.The Managing Director will be charged with overseeing all aspects of program management with the objective of ensuring our best-in-class program consistently achieves and exceeds established goals designed to meet the needs of the children and families we serve. The Managing Director will work closely with senior leaders to execute our strategic plan, provide top-level management support and leadership to a team of program managing directors, and will be a key presenter externally to champion HCZ’s model and work as it relates to our sustained impact at scale and beyond Harlem.For more information, check out .Reports To: The Chief Program OfficerRequirements

  • Master’s degree in Education, Social Services, or closely related field
  • Nonprofit management or other related experience with significant experience leading academic and enrichment-based youth development programming at multiple levels
  • Must be available to work flexible hours (after hours, weekends, holidays, etc.)

  • Superior analytical and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Resourcefulness, creativity and strong problem-solving skills
  • Has perspective on issues of equity, diversity and inclusion, particularly as it relates to management practices and our work within underserved communities of color
  • Must be able to handle confidential and sensitive information with tact and integrity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook

What you’ll doProgram Management

  • Lead the administrative and programmatic operations of Promise Academy Afterschool (four sites), Athletics (two sites), The Armory, and Community Programs (two sites), serving over 4,000 students annually.
  • Provide strategic oversight and direction for high-impact, youth-centered programming recognized for excellence in the field.
  • Drive initiatives that enhance college and career readiness across the full continuum of programs.
  • Embed health and wellness supports into all offerings to ensure holistic development of every child.
  • Utilize data, feedback, and continuous learning to inform program design, implementation, and outcomes.
  • Align staffing structures and program budgets with HCZ’s strategic priorities and long-term vision.

Strategy & Innovation

  • Lead the execution of key program innovations outlined in the organization’s strategic plan, including College & Career Readiness, Advocacy Case Management, Wellness & Mental Health, Community & Family Partnerships, and Healthy Harlem.
  • Support the development and implementation of HCZ’s broader strategic goals and organizational priorities.
  • Identify and recommend new opportunities for program growth, improvement, and impact.

People Management

  • Supervise a portfolio of leaders including Program Directors, a Lead Data Manager, and an Administrative Coordinator.
  • Build and nurture partnerships with external service providers and community collaborators.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain a talented, mission-aligned team of program professionals.
  • Cultivate strong, collaborative relationships across the organization and community to ensure programs meet the evolving needs of children and families.
  • Maintain consistent communication and alignment with HCZ senior leadership and internal stakeholders.
