The Learning Support Assistant will assist the class teacher by facilitating learning activities tailored to the needs of an individual pupil. The role involves in-class and out-of-class support, behaviour management, encouragement of peer interaction, and contribution to personal development targets as outlined in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). This role requires flexibility, patience, and the ability to build trusting relationships with both students and staff.Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one or small group support based on the student’s IEP and classroom objectives
- Promote academic engagement, independence, and confidence during lessons and transitions
- Assist in adapting activities and tasks to ensure curriculum accessibility for the named pupil
- Encourage social interaction and peer collaboration during class and playtime
- Support the student’s use of ICT in learning activities to build technological competence
- Monitor progress and provide informal feedback under the teacher’s guidance
- Supervise the student during breaks, transitions, swimming sessions, and arrivals/departures
- Follow school policies for behaviour, safeguarding, and inclusion
- Communicate effectively with the student, teachers, and parents to support development
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and relevant committees
- Report to the Head of Inclusion when the named pupil is absent and take on supportive duties as needed
Job Requirements
- Previous experience supporting students with diverse learning needs preferred
- Knowledge of behavioural and learning strategies that promote inclusion
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to support literacy, numeracy, and use of technology in learning
- Flexible, caring, patient, and committed to student well-being
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and behaviour policies
- Comfortable supporting physical activities including swimming, where required
