The (with campuses in Edneyville and Salemburg) provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for law enforcement officers on topics including: anti-terrorism, community oriented policing, criminal investigation, traffic crash investigation, firearms, self-defense, and management and supervision. Additionally, the Academy provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for Detention Officers and Telecommunicators on behalf of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

This position is located at the North Carolina Justice Academy’s East Campus in Salemburg and is assigned to the facility operations section. This is protective, security and public contact work in the operation of a State facility.

Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Maintain facilities of the North Carolina Justice Academy in a high state of readiness through proper maintenance and repair of campus wide HVAC systems. Systems include chillers, spilt systems, package units, PTAC’s, and boilers.
2. Assist maintenance technicians in the electrical, plumbing, automotive, and carpentry sections.
3. Perform routine and preventative maintenance associated with HVAC and refrigeration systems.
4. Evaluate and provide suggestions for improvements to the NCJA facilities.

Physical requirements:
Heavy work: Must have the ability to exerti up to 100 pounds of forces occasionally and or 50 pounds of force frequently, and or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Schedule:
This position generally works Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Night and or weekend work may be required due to problems or emergency situation.

This position requires a valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Selected candidate will undergo a background check.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $36,682 to $46,434. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate’s education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Working knowledge of refrigeration theory.
Working of knowledge of electrical components and systems used in HVAC.
Ability to diagnosis and repair complex HVAC systems.
Knowledge on how to perform proper preventative maintenance.
Knowledge/experience with natural gas equipment, commercial kitchen equipment and walk in freezers and coolers.

Requires current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III, or universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F. Valid NC Drivers License.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
