With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise- based statutory agency.The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.The PositionThe Assistant Director, Science strategy supports and leads the development of a ten year MDBA science strategy. The role will provide an understanding of the science program in MDBA, the future science needs of the MDBA linked to policy and future Basin Plan needs. The role will assist in bringing together all relevant information on key research questions, support in identifying gaps in knowledge, contribute to the narrative on MDBA’s use of best available science and help inform policymakers and practitioners. You will engage with diverse audiences including Executive, and other agencies and link to jurisdictions and research partner knowledge.Working at the science policy interface, you will use technical expertise and highly developed leadership, teamwork and policy skills to deliver tailored products to meet the needs of decision makers. You will explore best available science opportunities, MDBA research needs, policy and engagement insights to inform the development of Science Strategy. The role works closely with other parts of the Basin Strategy and Knowledge Portfolio and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, other agencies of the Australian Government, the Basin States and Territories and wider stakeholders.Your key responsibilities in this role are to:

  • Lead insights and development of briefing material for decision makers on broader science opportunities and the MDBA science need to meet future water policy, particularly Basin Plan requirements
  • Lead analysis of the MDBA suite of science programs that contribute to Basin-scale water policy and planning with science program managers
  • Tailor a science strategy product that shows an understanding of the linkages between the science program and policy across the MDBA, provides clarity for decision makers and outlines opportunities for future funding, collaboration and partnerships.
  • Review MDBA’s science outputs and needs, in collaboration with MDBA Science, Basin Plan policy and engagement teams
  • Represent the MDBA and engage with external stakeholders including Commonwealth agencies, jurisdictions and communities
  • Contribute to team leadership in Strategic Science and Partnerships.
  • Prepare written material for internal and external audiences
