Support the implementation and maintenance of Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS) programs to ensure a safe compliant work environment. Help monitor whether company standards are embedded into the operations to mitigate key risks for the site. Champion EHS principles across the site and work with management and staff to continuously improve EHS performance. Advise Support Services and Operations on the suitability and effectiveness of controls. Serve as a site EHS technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) in a subset of EHS matters in the vaccines research and development environment.

responsibilities:
– Support mitigation of key health and safety risks to our people (personnel, contractors, and visitors) and our reputation (federal, state, and local regulators and external public).

– Support the implementation of EHS programs at the Rockville Center for Vaccines Research (RCVR) site, help to verify programs and procedures are effective, and recommend ways to improve identification and mitigation of hazards and risks.

– Specific EHS hazard and risk areas may include, but are not limited to environmental compliance, storage & handling of materials, visitor and contractor safety management and oversight, biohazardous agents, chemical agents, emergency response, loss prevention and fire safety, process safety, ergonomics, noise, and non-ionizing radiation.

– Deliver training sessions to effectively train workers in safety issues including emergency response, spill response, laboratory safety practices, chemical storage, and other EHS subjects.

– Monitor site safety and/or environmental performance indicators and recommend action to support or correct trends. Work with service partners, GSK, and others to drive safety and EHS goals.

– Perform program audits, facility inspections, and generate recommended corrective actions. Maintain effective relationships with and provide required reporting to local regulators, service partners, and stakeholders.

– Collaborate with managers, scientists, and safety representatives to provide EHS technical advice and to coach workers on the effective implementation and management of the EHS programs.

– Participate in incident investigations and root cause analyses, and help develop and implement corrective and preventive action plans.

– Participate as member of the Emergency Response Team and be able to serve as Incident Command.

– Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

qualifications:
Educational Background:

– Bachelor’s Degree in an Environmental Sciences, Occupational Safety or other related scientific or engineering discipline, including chemistry or biological sciences.

– Professional certification (ASP/CSP) or designation (GSP) is preferred.

Job Related Experience:

– 1-7 years of experience in EHSS Role

– 1-5 years of experience in biomedical laboratories or manufacturing

Other Job-Related Skills/Background:

– Knowledge of OSHA safety and health regulations in general industry (29 CFR Part 1910).

– Experience in the implementation, and management of one or more programs related to high risk/high hazard management, risk assessments and control, processes and hazardous agents, health and wellbeing programs, and emergency response.

– Knowledge of risk management in general industry (operations and maintenance) projects.

– General knowledge of environmental compliance and regulatory requirements.

– Demonstrated organizational, trouble-shooting and communication skills, both written and verbal required.

– Ability to collaborate with and influence others at all levels of an organization.

– Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to make complex ideas seem simple and to deliver messages with clarity and impact.

– Demonstrated ability to prioritize plans, developing short and long term strategies to address complex issues.

– Ability to work in a fast-paced environment which requires one to successfully be able to change and revise plans quickly to meet demand.

– Demonstrated flexibility to create and systematically evaluate different alternative solutions to issues, while maintaining compliance to regulations and company standards.

– Must have excellent attention to detail. “Right-First-Time” deliverable of work products is expected. Must be able to work and make sound decisions with limited supervision or oversight.

– Occasional travel possible for program comparison and training in company EHS programs.
