More information about UW Tacoma and its strategic plan can be foundThe Director of Academic Advising will unify and elevate the academic advising experience at UW Tacoma, working across decentralized structures to foster a cohesive, student-centered approach that enhances retention, progression, and success across all programs. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success, the Director will create and implement a campus advising strategy that focuses on creating a consistent student academic experience that enhances student retention, progression, and success while supporting the distinctive needs of students in individual schools and programs. This position will develop and assess a shared vision for advising that integrates best practices, professional development, and equitable outcomes across all schools for undergraduate and graduate students. The Director will also serve as a liaison between program academic advisors, faculty, student affairs, school leadership, and campus-level student success initiatives while overseeing the lead advisor of University Academic Advising (UAA), which serves pre-major students.Duties & ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Strategy (20%)

  • Lead the creation and sustaining of a campus-level vision for academic advising to ensure a consistent and equitable advising experience for students across campus, in consultation with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success (AVCSS), Academic Advising Leadership Council (AALC), and other campus stakeholders.
  • Through a consultative process, develop a unified definition, learning outcomes, and UW Tacoma Academic Advising expectations to be disseminated, implemented, assessed, and regularly updated.
  • Develop and disseminate campus-level advising policies consistent with school, campus, and tri-campus policies and processes after appropriate consultation with campus stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the AVCSS and other leaders in Academic Success Programs (ASP) to align advising strategies with institutional priorities, particularly concerning student retention, graduation, and reduction of equity gaps.
  • Convene and lead the Academic Advising Leadership Council, All Undergraduate Advisor meetings, and the Graduate Advisor Committee. Meet regularly with UAA and school advisors to provide coordination and consideration of individual program needs.

Assessment & Continuous Improvement (20%)

  • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive assessment plan to evaluate the effectiveness of academic advising, using data to inform continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and track curricular and scheduling barriers and work with faculty and staff to ameliorate them.
  • Compile and communicate curricular pathways to stakeholders, including pre-majors and prospective students.
  • Coordinate improvements to transfer articulation and represent UW Tacoma in tri-campus efforts around equivalency systems.

Program Development & Outreach (20%)

  • Revamp, expand, and lead our early alert system, including best practices in mid-term check-ins.
  • In cooperation with Enrollment Services and other advisors, assess, expand, and coordinate student outreach for “eligible to register” students, potential returning students, and students on academic probation.
  • Lead the development of a campus-level student communications plan, including serving as the lead for Academic Affairs in the integration of Slate Student Success.

Collaboration & Communication (20%)

  • Build strong partnerships with faculty, program staff, and school leadership to align advising practices with academic goals and promote a shared commitment to student success.
  • Work with other stakeholders to develop a shared vision and plan for activating the space occupied by UAA, Career Development and Education, Office of Undergraduate Education, and Office of Global Affairs.
  • Serve as the local contact for the College Success Foundation (CSF) coach, and work with their direct supervisor at CSF to support their work at UW Tacoma.
  • Establish regular communication channels between major advisors, pre-major advisors, and campus leadership to address challenges and share best practices.
  • Ensure advising perspectives are considered in institutional decision-making. Represent advising perspectives on related campus committees, including the CARE Team, Slate Student Success, Reinstatement, Academic Policy and Curricular Committee, etc. Serve as a point of contact for related campus and tri-campus stakeholders, including enrollment services, student life, and the Registrar.
  • Be a part of the ASP leadership team and participate in shared initiatives.
  • Serve as a consultant for faculty governance in academic policy development.
  • Serve as a resource to Academic Affairs and campus leadership in evaluating ongoing campus advising initiatives.

Supervision & Leadership Development (20%)

  • Lead the creation and implementation of an advisor onboarding and ongoing professional development program in consultation with the AALC.
  • Supervise the UAA Lead, providing guidance and support to ensure effective advising for new and pre-major students.
  • Mentor and develop advising leaders across campus, promoting a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of experience in directly advising students to include at least two years of management and leadership experience in a higher education context involving team supervision and/or development.

Additional Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and motivate others, including direct reports and other stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration skills, including working with faculty, staff, and administrators across different departments or units.
  • Demonstrated facility in working with and promoting the success of student populations strongly represented at UW Tacoma: first-generation, transfer, economically marginalized, veteran, and students of color.
  • Comfort and proficiency with data analysis and the use of data in decision making
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to listen to multiple perspectives, make a decision, and communicate those decisions back to impacted audiences.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.Desired

  • Master’s degree.
  • At least five years of experience in directly advising students.
  • Demonstrated experience managing advising programs in a decentralized or complex higher education environment.
  • Experience with strategic planning and program development, particularly in advising or student success initiatives.
  • Ability to develop, implement, assess, and refine new initiatives in a deliberate, collaborative, timely, and effective manner.
  • Experience with assessment, data-driven decision-making, and the use of technology to enhance advising services.
  • Experience working with academic policy, which could include development, refinement, or implementation.
