Duties
The FAA seeks an innovative leader with substantial experience leading a cross-disciplined technical training function for a large, technical, and complex workforce. The Director, FAA Academy leads the Academy and is responsible for executing the mission of the Academy. As the Director, you will lead training and development programs for the FAA, military, and other agency and foreign national personnel in all phases of highly specialized activities such as aircraft operation and maintenance, air traffic control, air navigation facilities, and airborne electronic equipment maintenance. Additionally, as the Director, you will oversee the development of school curricula, course materials, and training techniques, direct the requirements for learning facilities and funds, and exercise overall control over school organization, program planning, and program execution.
The Director executes the duties and responsibilities via a team of approximately 350 federal employees, including six senior-level direct-report managers, and contract employees. The Director administers a budget of approximately $70M and exercises influence over the execution of over $75M in training support managed by the Office of Flight Standards Service and the Air Traffic Organization.
Principal Responsibilities
- Manage the direction, planning, and coordination of all in-residence and directed study training provided by the Academy.
- Direct the establishment of program objectives and professional standards governing the execution of the various technical training programs.
- Serve as principal advisor to top agency management in the broad area of Academy management and operations and participate in the formulation of Washington-level plans and policies that affect agency training and training-related programs.
- Direct the planning and implementation of an agency-wide, computer-based instruction and distance learning systems and implement approved plans and curriculum development utilizing internal resources or contracted methods.
- Lead the development and integration of Next Generation (NextGen) Air Traffic System education programs and training technologies into the Academy.
- Direct the international and student liaison affairs to ensure that both domestic and international students are properly supported. Ensure all international students and visitors are provided proper care, such as orientation, assistance in travel, housing, on-the-job training, and coordination with the community.

Qualifications
As a basic requirement for entry into the FAA Executive System, you must provide evidence of progressively responsible leadership experience that is indicative of senior executive level management capability; and that is directly related to the skills and abilities outlined under the Leadership and Technical Requirements listed below.

- TECHNICAL REQUIREMENT: Demonstrated experience leading the delivery of cross-disciplined technical training, research, and consultation programs for a large, dynamic, and complex organization.
- TECHNICAL REQUIREMENT: Demonstrated Experience in one or more technical aviation functions, e.g., aviation safety standards/inspection, air traffic control, national airspace system maintenance, or similar related areas.
