About the role
Council has an exciting opportunity to assist with temporary backfill of the Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor role.
You will play an active role in mentoring junior staff in the Building Approvals Team across the range of approvals activities. Key functions falling within the scope of this role include:
- Assessments, issue, and inspections for a range of building permit applications and associated Certificate of Final Inspection/Occupancy Permit.
- Assisting in the resolution of lapsed permits
- Engaging with customers through coordination of Better Approvals Merri-bek program
- Assessment of complex report and consent applications.
- Assist the Municipal Building Surveyor to carry out various duties and act as Municipal Building Surveyor in periods of absence.

Skills and experience require to perform the role
- Current registration as a Registered Building Practitioner category of Building Surveyor Unlimited (BSU) with the Victorian Building Authority.
- Demonstrated experience in local government as a building surveyor and enforcement officer that has dealt with combustible cladding auditing, enforcement, assessment and resolution is preferrable.
- An excellent understanding of the interpretation and application of the Building Act and Regulations, Building Code of Australia Volumes 1 and 2 and referenced standards and current building practices.
- Good understanding of risk management principles and ability to implement these principles.
- Prior experience in the inspection, auditing and assessment of building work and existing buildings for compliance and safety in relation to non-compliant building work, illegal building work essential safety measures as they relate.
- Proven commitment to a high standard of customer service and enthusiasm for serving all stakeholders, incorporating the capacity to diplomatically handle customer complaints.
