The Community Service Officer (CSO) role is part of the Vanderbilt University Public Safety Department assigned to the new Safety and Security Program at the University School of Nashville (USN) and aims to promote a safe and secure educational environment for students, staff, faculty, parents, and visitors. Experience working in a school setting is highly preferred.

Individual position responsibilities are outlined below:

General Information

  • Assignment Location: University School of Nashville
  • Schedule/Shift: Monday – Friday; 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm OR
  • Schedule/Shift: Tuesday – Friday; 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm and Saturday; 10:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Pay rate: $19.50 per hour which includes a shift differential.
  • This is an unarmed position.

Assignment Duties: Community Service Officer

  • Reports to the School Resource Officer (SRO) – Sergeant for USN.
  • Must be able to work some weekends and evenings for special events as needed.
  • Patrols both campuses of USN.
  • Staff security posts on both campuses.
  • Conducts daily security checks of both campuses.
  • Responds to any reports of safety or security concerns.
  • Enforces the visitor management policy in conjunction with USN staff.
  • Conducts and coordinates traffic direction during peak times of the day at the main campus.
  • Tracks all activity on a Daily Activity Log and submits it to the SRO Sergeant daily.
  • Meets weekly with the Safety and Security Team at USN.
  • Works special events at USN.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Previous experience working in a school setting is preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills required.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills is required.
  • Possession of a Private Protective Services Act certification is required.
  • CPR and AED certification or become certified within 90 days is required.
  • Completion of Pressure Point Control Tactics, Asp Baton, pepper spray, or similar training is required.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license in the State of Tennessee eligibility to obtain one or do so within 60 days of appointment is required.

  • 18 years of age is required.
  • Ability to operate computerized equipment and a two-way radio is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Walk, climb, and lift.
  • Required to work nights/weekends/holidays.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather and various weather extremes.

Working Environment

  • Required to work nights/weekends/holidays.

  • May encounter such things as hazardous materials, infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, steam, car battery acid, loud noises, smoke, and fire.
  • Must be able to correctly use a TB Mask and other precautionary equipment.
  • May encounter physical danger from violent patients, suspects, and others.
