Position Purpose

The Purpose of the Community Advisor position is to provide in-residence leadership for students enrolled in the Central Summer Academy at The University of Central Missouri.

Must be available to work May 22 – Aug 18, 2024.

Educator

1. Facilitate/plan programs for your residents that meet their specific needs as Pell-eligible First Generation and/or Historically Underrepresented First Term Freshmen.

2. Facilitate/plan developmental opportunities that educate residents on what it means to

be a positive and productive member of the UCM Community; lead by example.

3. Teach residents how to navigate the university, both physically (where and how) and

virtually (using MyCentral, Blackboard, Guide, website, etc.).

Helper

1. Be available and accessible to the students. Develop trusting relationships by

spending quality interaction time whenever your assigned students are not engaged in

other scheduled activities.

2. Assist students with personal, social, and academic concerns.

3. Respond to emergency situations quickly. Mobility throughout the residence hall is

essential.

4. Document and report all emergency situations to the Public Safety and the Program

Coordinator immediately upon gaining knowledge.

5. Act as a referral agent for students to different campus and community agencies.

6. Get to know all the students in your community. Value diversity, respect each student, and maintain confidentiality

7. Help develop a healthy respect for University Staff, Faculty, Administration, students,

and other friends of the UCM community by supporting and displaying a positive attitude toward the same

Connector

1. Schedule and conduct regular meetings and solicit feedback; facilitate problem-solving that leads to student success.

2. Build relationships with University Staff, Faculty, and Administration; use your

relationships to connect students with partners in their success.

3. Plan and lead social programs/events to facilitate relationship-building among

students enrolled in the program.

4. Assist students in finding ways to find their fit and get involved (clubs, organizations,

activities, etc.).

Civility Agent

1. Develop a responsible living environment in the community utilizing effective

interaction and outreach.

2. Consistently encourage responsible behavior by the residents; lead by example.

3. Actively confront all misconduct and disciplinary situations; complete documentation

of the situation as appropriate.

Other Job Expectations

1. Must be available for work: May 22, 2024 – Aug 18, 2024

2. Complete mandatory training prior to the Central Summer Academy start date

3. While there will be assigned “on-duty” hours, this position has responsibilities related

to public safety and housing facility concerns that extend beyond those hours around the

clock (24 hours)

4. Must remain in your residence hall during overnight hours and be available to respond

accordingly to contingent situations that may arise.

5. Responsible for understanding and carrying out all policies and procedures related to

University Housing

6. Additional expectations may be set by the Summer Success Academy Program

Coordinator, University Leaders serving on the Summer Success Academy Committee,

and University Housing authorities.

7. This position is not expected to work more than 20 “on-duty” hours weekly.

Experience

You must have completed 30 credit hours prior to your placement and have lived in University Housing for at least one full academic year prior to beginning employment.

– Must enroll in at least 1 summer session credit hour.

– Must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average.

– Be in good standing with the University of Central Missouri and University Housing. A Community Advisor cannot be on disciplinary or academic probation.

– Preference will be given to students who have previous experience as a Community

Advisor or experience working in campus housing.

– Preference will be given to current continuing UCM students
