An exciting opportunity exists for the Clinical Nurse – Emergency Department Mental Health to provide specialist intake assessment, consultation, education and support to Emergency Department staff when making decisions regarding interventions and management of mental health consumers.

The CN’s role is to lead and deliver person centred nursing care at an advanced level based on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse Standards for Practice and is expected to be able to practice autonomously and provide leadership in clinical decision making. They also have the responsibility for professional leadership in the absence of the Nurse Grade 7 and an opportunity to work collaboratively to lead practice changes and clinical innovation.

The SCUH (Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Birtinya) and Nambour General Hospital Emergency Department Mental Health (EDMH) team provide 24-hour access to specialist mental health and addiction expertise. It is expected that the EDMH team will provide after business hours support and mental health and addiction consultation to the Emergency Departments at Gympie and Maleny.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • The team is based in the Emergency Department at Nambour General Hospital and Sunshine Coast University Hospital and provides triage-intake and assessments of people referred for a mental health consult within the Emergency Departments. The team may also provide after business hours mental health consultation to the Emergency Department of Gympie and Maleny Hospitals.
  • The team aims to provide:
  • professional clinical practice that optimises the efficiency and safety of entry, transition and discharge from the Emergency Department, to ensure the provision of a safe environment by ascertaining that self and others adhere to guidelines, scope of practice, standards, procedure, policy and relevant legislation; and that there is adequate supervision and direction for all staff attending to the consumer their family and carers.
  • promote clinical workforce capability development through professional and operational supervision.
  • application of a multidisciplinary approach to assessments and transitions.
  • lead the engagement of alternative clinical pathways to primary mental health care for consumers and their family’s not requiring acute psychiatric follow-up

Remuneration value up to $128,057 p.a., comprising salary between $104,816 – $112,236 p.a. (f/t), or salary rates: $52.86 – $56.60 p.h. (p/t), employer contribution to superannuation (up to 12.75%) and annual leave loading (17.5%) (Nurse Grade 6-1) (full time and part time positions available).
