Pretoria National Botanical Garden – Biodiversity Information and Policy Advice Division

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to provide support on SANBIs implementation and management of the GEF – funded Biodiversity Economy project on building biodiversity economy nodes for community stewardship and livelihoods and the development of the Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECM) program of work.

A national diploma in Natural Sciences, Environmental Management or equivalent qualification at NQF 6 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field or an advanced diploma or a degree in Natural Sciences, Environmental Management or equivalent qualification at NQF 7 with 2 years of work experience in the relevant field. A postgraduate degree in Natural Sciences, Environmental Management or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: in-depth knowledge of biodiversity stewardship and conservation interventions; stakeholder engagement and relationship building; understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation; knowledge of protected area legislations; knowledge of biodiversity economy; knowledge of the science-policy-practice interface; project and time management knowledge and skills; good interpersonal and problem solving skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (MS Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid drivers licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Support the development and implementation of the Biodiversity Economy project as well as the overall SANBI OECM programme;
  • Support establishment of partnership and stakeholder engagements;
  • Assist on SANBIs policy, legal and technical aspects related to protected areas, biodiversity stewardship and OECM implementation; and
  • Project management support to the Deputy Director: Biodiversity Stewardship.
