The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency. The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. The Position

The Senior Project Officer – Basin Plan Ecohydrology undertakes technical analysis and project work related to ecological and hydrological sciences to support the implementation of the Basin Plan. The role works closely with other parts of the Basin Strategy and Knowledge Portfolio and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, other agencies of the Australian Government, the Basin States and Territories and wider stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities in this role are to:

  • Contribute to the application of ecological and hydrological sciences in a policy context to meet the objectives of the MDBA.
  • Co-ordinate and/or provide technical input to information synthesis, knowledge gathering, data analysis and research on water policy and complex technical issues.
  • Provide detailed analysis and policy advice to support the implementation of key elements of the Basin Plan including the Northern Basin ‘toolkit’, Sustainable Diversion Limit (SDL) Adjustment Mechanism and water resource plan’s .
  • Maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and work across Commonwealth and State agencies to build understanding and help ensure a coordinated approach across governments and policy.
  • Maintain a high level of written and oral communication including the preparation of agenda papers, presentations, and briefing notes for MDBA Executive, the Authority, Working Groups and external committees as required.
  • Work effectively within the team and Program and develop constructive working relationships across the organisation to successfully develop and implement the work program.
