Assistant Principal of Instruction: The Assistant Principal of Instruction is responsible for supporting the Principal in the operation of the school site and is held accountable for attaining all designated Bright Star school outcomes, ultimately responsible for meeting teacher, student, and parent needs. The Assistant Principal of Instruction’s primary area of responsibility includes oversight of the classroom instructional program, including instructional coaching, curriculum implementation, assessment and data analysis, and ensuring a positive learning environment for all students.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum:

  • Valid, Clear, California Teaching Credential (Single Subject or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential preferred)
  • At least three years of teaching experience (grades 9-12 preferred) with consistent student achievement and growth.
  • Evidence of strong organizational, student management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Extremely high standards for student academic work and student behavior – the belief that all of our students (who are primarily from low-income, educationally disadvantaged families) will be able to rise to the same academic challenges and compete at the top levels with all students, regardless of family background.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and delegate as appropriate.
  • Working knowledge of Google Apps and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), plus an aptitude for quickly learning and mastering other data-based programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to quickly digest and, when needed, create documents for the school community (students, teachers, parents).
  • Ability to analyze complex student data, identify trends, and create action steps that will lead to student growth
  • Understanding of and agreement with our student, parent, and employee expectations.
  • Industriousness and Enthusiasm, defined as working diligently to ensure the success of students, teachers, families, and the school.
  • Humility, receptiveness to feedback, and evidence of being a constant learner.

Desired (but not required) in order of importance:

  • At least two years of experience in an instructional coaching, mentoring, or an administrative role.
  • Administrative credential (or willingness to pursue)
  • Experience supervising other employees.
  • Fluency in a second language. Willingness to learn Spanish if that isn’t the language of fluency.
  • Post-graduate degree (Masters, Administrative Credential, or MBA.)

Responsibilities and Duties

Components of the Job Description for this position

In conjunction with the Principal, the VAHS Assistant Principal of Instruction will create and push VAHS’s vision forward. This person will coach, mentor, and support the VAHS teaching staff (8-12 teachers in the 2024-2025 school year). This person will also support the instruction and curriculum development of the site, in addition to instructional assessments.

The Assistant Principal of Instruction, under the direct supervision and coaching of the Principal, will manage the following programs:

  • Teacher Coaching and Development
  • Leading instructional coaching with a caseload of teachers.
  • Weekly coaching meetings with all teachers on your caseload that include professional goal-setting conversations, planning conversations, observation debriefs, and analysis of student learning conversations.
  • Data-driven conversations and coaching; assess teacher practice, student achievement and set goals and action steps collaboratively with teachers to support to meet growth goals for students
  • Supporting teachers with creating a positive classroom learning environment following the Bright Star Culture Framework, restorative practices, and PBIS systems.
  • Enforcement by teachers and staff of the rules and procedures as outlined in the teacher and administrative handbooks.
  • Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for the Instructional Leadership Teams, which include the Academic Leaders (Deans) and Department Leads. The Assistant Principal of Instruction gathers input from teachers and then supports the Principal in defining the scope of PLCs.
  • Professional Development Design and Implementation. The Assistant Principal of Instruction will work with the Principal to create a yearlong Scope and Sequence plan for Staff Professional Development. The Assistant Principal of Instruction will take the lead on planning and executing instructional PDs.
  • Curriculum Implementation and Support
  • Is the school-site expert on our major curricula, SpringBoard, Illustrative Mathematics, Facing History, etc. for the departments the API oversees (departments split between the API, Dean of Instruction, and Instructional Coach)
  • Offer and facilitate with expertise on California State Standards of Instruction, particularly Common Core and NGSS standards.
  • Supports teachers to implement the curriculum with integrity.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on teachers’ yearlong scope and sequences, unit plans, weekly lesson plans, and instructional materials.
  • In conjunction with the Principal and SST, designs an instructional calendar and schedule that reflects the school values, big rocks, and areas of growth.
  • In conjunction with the Principal, executes the VAHS vision for literacy development.
  • Assessment, Data Analysis, and Intervention
  • Manages formative and summative assessments
  • LEA Coordinator for CAASPP (including SBAC and CAST)
  • Curriculum-based assessments
  • Performance Tasks
  • AP Exams
  • Manages intervention program implementation and data analysis (i-Ready)
  • Oversees gradebooks, report cards, and transcripts
  • Collection and analysis of subgroup data (e.g., race, socioeconomic status, gender, students with disabilities, English Language Learners); API will action plan with principal and teachers to meet growth goals for students

Commitment

This is a full time role. The commitment for this position is approximately 40 hours per week. The general hours of operation of the schools are Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The specific hours for the Assistant Principal of Instruction will vary depending on teacher and campus needs. As a member of the leadership team, the Assistant Principal of Instruction must be flexible with regard to the daily and weekly schedule.

The Assistant Principal of Instruction may also be expected to attend an average of two evening events per month (approx. 1.5 hr commitment to each such event or program). The position also requires out-of-town days each year, including our student life experience lessons and an annual faculty retreat/team building experience. The calling of the position often requires a time commitment beyond the basic hours.

In addition, being a part of a Bright Star leadership school team requires staff to go above and beyond their job description. The Assistant Principal of Instruction may be called upon to support the team in ways not listed, and this type of environment and learning opportunities must excite the candidate.
