Position: Dean of Student Culture – Stella Middle Charter Academy

Reporting to: Dean of Restorative Practices (Lead)

Status: Full time, Non-Exempt

OVERVIEW

Bright Star Schools is a Charter Organization committed to preparing students for college and life beyond. The Dean of Student Culture (DSC) plays an important role in that commitment. The DSC will implement the school’s Restorative Practices vision and systems with fidelity, under the direction of and in collaboration with the Dean of Restorative Practices, at the student-facing level. Responsibilities include tracking of behavior data, investigations, documentation, and communication with families, school counselors, administration and the Organization. Use of this data will inform school-wide Restorative Practices policies and procedures. The objective of this position is to build student capacity around restorative practice to positively impact school culture and student futures, while ensuring that all procedures are followed with strict adherence to Bright Star School policy. The DSC will ensure all students are treated in a fair and respectful manner while being held accountable to the Bright Star behavior expectations and Stella Middle Charter Academy Commitments. The DSC will be responsible for creating and maintaining all discipline documentation, as well as serving as liaison between the school and LAUSD and law enforcement when needed.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working with at-risk youth
  • Advocacy skills
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
  • Must be detail-oriented
  • Ability to manage groups of students in after school Reflection Room
  • Ability to develop and work with various student tracking systems, and use behavior data to inform school-wide social, emotional and academic practices
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proactive approach essential
  • Must embody a high sense of integrity and professionalism
  • Willingness to receive feedback, engage in frequent dialogue, and ability to self-reflect
  • Firmly committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-biased, and equitable classroom environment

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Supervising and actively supporting culture norms during all outdoor activities, including but not limited to:
  • Lunch and Breaks
  • Arrival and dismissal
  • After School events
  • Transitions
  • Facilitating Reflection Room procedures and supporting teachers and students in restorative conversations
  • Monitoring and presenting DeansList behavior and incident data to stakeholders as needed
  • Managing of the Gryffon Store (a positive incentive in school’s PBIS)
  • Conducting incident investigations with fidelity to school procedures and protocols
  • Ensuring timely documentation of behaviors and incidents in DeansList and Aeries, as appropriate
  • Collaborating with school staff to build restorative practice capacity
  • Other duties as needed
  • Student mentorship
  • Behavioral guidance, support, and instruction
  • Appropriate identification of students social and emotional needs
  • Provide resources and referrals and wraparound services as necessary
  • Communication with families
  • Offer resources and support for family challenges
  • Parent conferences as deemed necessary for individual students
  • Home visits may be conducted as needed
  • Provide classroom support
  • Teacher / classroom check-in and push-in and behavioral support
  • Other Duties may include (based on experience and skill set)
  • Coordinate Parent Group activities
  • Develop Parent Education curriculum
  • Coordinate Student Activities for most at-risk students
  • Manage all suspensions and expulsions

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of experience in a student behavior support role
  • Fluency Spanish (highly desired)
  • Experience using data management systems
  • Experience working with youth from historically-underserved communities
  • Experience working in fast-moving environment; crisis management

Benefits:

SALARY & BENEFITS:

Salary: $67,000 – $107,000 per BSS Dean w/o Credential salary scale

Status: Full Time

Start Date: An exceptional candidate will assume a full time role no later than July 2023.
