The King County Executive’s Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget (PSB) is hiring interns to work with several different teams within the office as part of the 2024 PSB Summer Internship Program.
Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the workings of government, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service. Depending on the assignment, interns may interact with a wide variety of people including staff, elected officials, community members, or program participants.
Interns will have the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and take advantage of County training and learning opportunities. Opportunities to engage as an intern cohort, network and connect with leaders across the organization, and participate in outings to various County operations add to the intern experience at PSB.

The Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) is in the Executive department of King County government. It serves as a resource to the County’s departments and agencies in developing and implementing budgets, strategic plans, financial plans, visual management tools, continuous improvement processes, and performance metrics. It is also responsible for regional planning and implementation of Lean process improvement. Equitable Employment and Housing Practices Research Intern
This internship will be with the Performance & Strategy section of PSB. This position will help with several research projects related to equitable job and housing development strategies:
The Jobs and Housing team is developing a proposal to scope out a local hire program, modeled after the . The team is interested in learning more about similar program models across the country.
The King County Council introduced a motion requesting the executive to provide recommendations to restore justice for race-based restrictive real estate practices. PSB will submit a letter that includes an overview of reparative actions that local jurisdictions in the country have considered and implemented such as case payments, housing assistance, education and/or job training, financial services, land return and start-up capital.
Depending on available time and resources, there may be additional research projects that may come up. Topics may include budget formats, King County’s Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan Refresh, and other topics related to performance and strategy.
Job Duties
Mentored by a supervisor, the Intern will:
Research best practices and program models in County or City employment programs serving individuals with barriers to employment
Research reparative actions that other local jurisdictions have considered or implemented to restore justice for race-based restrictive real estate practices
Create surveys and/or conduct interviews with local staff and community members to supplement research
Organize and present research results to PSB staff
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in housing, economic development, public policy, government administration, and sociology. Students in other programs with relevant interests and skills are also encouraged to apply
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Ability to effectively manage different work projects and academic coursework and schedules
Effective communication and organizational skills
Ability to apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work and work environment

TELECOMMUTING:
This position will work a hybrid of in-person (on-site) and telework, depending on operational need. Interns will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.

WHO MAY APPLY: This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled and continuing in the fall of 2024 in full time status at an accredited university/college with coursework in the described areas. Proof of full-time enrollment status may be required.
WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule will be Monday-Friday. During the school term, the work week will consist of 10-20 hours at the discretion of your supervisor. During summer, the work week will consist of 40 hours. These are internships expected to last until mid- to late-August, although the position may begin earlier or end later depending on project and scheduling needs.
