Job description: The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has an exciting opportunity to join their team of sworn professionals as a Deputy Sheriff. This opportunity is for individuals who are in the process of obtaining or have successfully completed a Commission on Peace Officer Standard (POST) certified, regular basic course within the last three years.
As a Deputy Sheriff with the County of San Luis Obispo, you are responsible for patrolling assigned areas for the maintenance of order and the protection of life and property. This involves a wide variety of activities included, but not limited to, reporting to scenes of disturbances, accidents, or reported crimes, making preliminary investigations, issuing citations, and arresting lawless persons. Additionally, you are involved in serving warrants and other legal papers, escorting and transporting criminals and psychopathic persons, and participating in raids. In this role, you may act as bailiff in Superior Court or in Municipal Court. Under general supervision, perform varied law enforcement duties and perform other related work as required.
Typical Tasks and Representative Duties

- Patrol assigned areas for the maintenance of order and the protection of life and property;
- Report to scenes of disturbances, accidents, or reported crimes, and make preliminary investigations, issue citations, arrest lawless persons, or take other appropriate action;
- Protect and collect evidence;
- Enforce laws and ordinances, and assist other law enforcement agencies;
- Receive and transmit radio messages; use computer applications;
- Serve warrants and other legal papers;
- Escort and transport criminals and psychopathic persons;
- Participate in raids; testify in court; and may act as bailiff in Superior Court;
- Receive, search, book, photograph, fingerprint, and guard prisoners that are incarcerated by the Sheriff’s Office;
- Perform identification record keeping duties;
- Use firearms and other devices for personal security and protection of others;
- Preserve law and order, and apprehend criminals;
- Give assistance to distressed persons, and administer first aid;
- Assist in Coroner investigations;
- Prepare reports and keep record of activities.

Starting Salary:
Deputy Sheriff – $44.07 – $56.24 per hour
Other Incentives/Benefits:
- Educational Incentive upon completion of an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or POST certification
- $1,500 Safety Equipment allowance upon hire

- Differential Pay (5% evening, 10% night)

The ideal candidate will have excellent character, strong ethics and observing skills, and be adept in executing the basic principles of law enforcement, public safety, and personal security. The ability to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard for the hazards and circumstances of a given situation, as well as understand and follow written and oral directions is key. Strong oral and written communication skills, especially with regard to writing clear and comprehensive reports is key.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or possession of a general education development test certificate indicating high school graduation level or its equivalent as determined by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Proof of minimum educational requirement may be required.
Applicants must be in the process of obtaining or have successfully completed a Commission on Peace Officer Standard (POST) certified, regular basic course within the last three years. Proof of graduation from a POST academy or current POST basic certification is required prior to appointment.
Licenses and Certificates:
A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

The Recruitment Process:
- Application screenings will be conducted to determine if candidates meet the minimum qualifications for the position as outlined in the job posting.
- A physical agility test and panel interview will be required as part of the exam process.
PLEASE NOTE – Candidates who have completed and passed the Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) physical agility exam, with a score of 384 or higher, within the three months prior to the exam date for this recruitment, may be eligible to waive this element of the testing process with adequate documentation provided.

OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Age: All applicants must be 21 years of age or older with the following exception: Persons 20 years of age, but less than 21, may apply but may not be appointed until they reach 21 years of age. Proof of minimum age requirements may be required.
General: Must meet the minimum peace officer standards as specified in California Government Code sections 1029 and 1031.
Character: Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation. No conviction by any State, the Federal Government or a foreign government of a crime which could have been punishable by imprisonment in a Federal Penitentiary or a State prison.

To accept a position with the Sheriff’s Office, you must successfully complete a Sheriff’s Background Investigation. Below is a partial list of offenses or issues that may disqualify you from successful completion. Please review the below list:
- Any felony conviction
- Recent misdemeanor conviction, or any two misdemeanor convictions as an adult
- Poor employment history
- Any sale, manufacture, or cultivation of illegal drugs
- Recent use of illegal substances such as opiates, hallucinogens, injectables, cocaine, methamphetamine, or similar substance
- Poor driving record such as numerous hazardous traffic violations or chargeable accidents
- Recent conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, or any two convictions for this offense as an adult
- Any act of domestic violence, as defined by law
- Any crime committed against a child
