The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking to fill various Assistant Director (EL1) roles across the Data Sourcing Division.
Depending on the role, the successful applicants can work out of our offices in Belconnen (Canberra), Geelong, Docklands (Melbourne), Brisbane and Hobart, although flexible working arrangements (including a hybrid model of working from home and the office) apply.
About the areas
The ABS’ Data Sourcing Division is responsible for sourcing the data needed to produce independent and reliable information on a wide range of social, environmental and economic matters. We aim to provide a seamless, digital first approach to data provision which meets the needs and expectations of our individual, household, business and government providers.
About the roles
As an Assistant Director in the division, your role may include:
- Leading and managing a team to deliver outcomes.
- Delivering complex and time sensitive projects or programs of work.
- Fostering an environment of continuous improvement, including facilitating access to professional development and training as required.
- Building and maintaining a range of relationships with stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Developing and managing programs or projects using agile or other project management principles.

We are looking for inspirational leaders who want to contribute to both the delivery of ABS’ data sourcing operations as well as the development and uplift of ABS’ data sourcing solutions.
To be found suitable as an Assistant Director in the Data Sourcing Division, you should be able to demonstrate most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:
- Ability to lead and develop high performing teams; build capability and effectively manage people.
- Ability to understand organisational objectives and align operational requirements accordingly.
- Adapt and work effectively in times of uncertainty or major change.
- Well-developed communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders and nurture positive working relationships to achieve outcomes.
- Strong program or project management process knowledge and experience.
