The Hennepin County Information Technology (IT) Department is seeking a student to participate in a part-time IT internship as a cloud cost efficiency analyst intern. The intern will gain exposure to public cloud technology such as Microsoft Azure, as well as an introduction to Financial Operations (FinOps) methodologies and processes. FinOps, also called Cloud Cost Efficiency, is the oversight and management of the county’s public cloud expenditures. This includes guidance, standards, processes, modeling, estimation, and communication for cloud cost. The intern will actively engage and see how Hennepin County IT accelerates the maturation of FinOps processes, leading to enhanced cost efficiency over the county’s cloud expenditure in the long term. This position requires a level 3 security check as a requirement for employment.

Location and hours:

This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site an average of 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings, trainings, or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable. Work hours are Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. This internship will start on June 2024, and will last one year in duration with the potential to extend on a case-by-case basis. This intern will work approximately 20 hours/week.

While this position is designated as remote, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota.

New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In this position, you will:

  • Participate in Project Planning, Communication and Lines of Business (LoBs) Coordination.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in Engineering, Finance, IT Operations, and Architecture.
  • Perform Cloud Tags Update, Cloud Tags Validation, and Tagging Compliance.
  • Maintain Cloud Workloads and SaaS Inventory.
  • Complete requests for Cloud Workload Cost Estimations.
  • Identify cloud resources for Cost Optimization (Reservations, Rightsizing, Savings Plan, etc.).
  • Monitor Cloud Cost Anomaly and Identify Cloud Orphans.
  • Perform Data Analysis.

Need to have:

  • Current enrollment or recently graduated (within 6-months) in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in IT, Finance, or a related field.
  • Access to reliable internet connection and self-support remote office space.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with:
  • IT and/or financial analysis.
  • Cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google, and other cloud platforms.
  • Microsoft Office or equivalent Google products.
  • Server administration.
  • Software development.
  • Ability to:
  • Talk in front of small groups.
  • Be responsible, detail orientated, and self-directed.
  • Meet deadlines.
  • Interface with a variety of personnel (IT Engineers, IT Architects, IT Management, Lines of Business managers)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
