Job description: General Summary:

Under the general direction of the Systems Safety Manager, the Safety Advisor provides administrative and technical assistance to DTC’s occupational health and safety program while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Responsible for insuring the safe and efficient operation of Detroit Transportation Corporation in compliance with regulatory agency oversight requirements.

Provides additional administrative support to the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains compliance with the following federal and state rail safety and oversight requirements and industrial and occupational health and safety standards
  • Coordinates the development and oversee implementation of DTC’s workplace health and safety programs
  • Recommends updated of DTC operations, maintenance and safety policies and procedures in order to maintain safe working conditions, eliminate hazards and to provide changes in the Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP)
  • Conducts safety audits, inspections and risk assessments of DTC’s facilities, equipment and work practices, identifying and documenting potential safety hazards
  • Conducts tests of environmental and workplace quality factors to comply with local, state, and federal laws regarding radiation, air quality, and other hazards
  • Establishes, coordinates and conducts safety training to prevent and reduce occupational and passenger injuries
  • Investigates and reports data related to employee injuries, accidents and other hazards
  • Investigates incidents and complaints, as assigned, and recommends corrective action
  • Oversees the installation of safety devices and protective equipment, may assist with the installation
  • Assists in the Employee Safety Committee
  • Assists in various audits
  • Maintains safety-training records
  • Prepares a variety of safety reports
  • May assist in coordinating DTC’s accident investigation and environmental clean-up efforts
  • May assist in reviewing plans in specifications for facilities modifications, equipment purchases, and contractor work practices to insure compliance with safety standards and maintenance requirements
  • May inspect equipment and safety gear to ensure proper operation and workers’ protection
  • Actively solicits feedback from colleagues and supervisor on opportunities for growth and development
  • Incorporates safety into all aspects of job functions
  • Must work within established methods, practices, procedures, policies of the DTC and federal or state laws
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Associate degree in environmental health or related field
  • 3 years of experience working in safety
  • Combination of education and experience may substitute for minimum requirements

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health or related field
  • 5 years of experience working in safety
  • Experience working in the public sector
  • Certification in: CSP, CHST, GSP, ASP, OSHA Trainer, First Aid and CPR

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.)
  • Proficient in safety reporting software
  • Detailed understanding of federal, state, and local safety requirements and compliance
  • Familiarity with MIOSHA requirements
  • Ability to present trainings to a diverse group
  • Ability to work professionally with employees at all levels, contractors and passengers

Expected salary: $56730 per year
