The assistant principal supports the implementation of the instructional and cultural vision, school-wide strategic plan including, but not limited to: coordinating assessments, teacher coaching and support, and supporting the principal with all school based needs. As the Assistant Principal is one of the main coaches for teachers, their pedagogical background will be imperative in helping them lead professional development for teachers and meetings with teacher leaders. In addition, this individual plays a major role in establishing and managing the school culture through aligned systems and structures under the umbrellas of MTSS, PBIS, progressive discipline and restorative practices. This equity based leader would also be responsible for oversight of social emotional student learning and non-instructional student programs such as Life Experience Lessons (field trips) and student activities.The Assistant Principal’s primary area of responsibility includes developing relationships with students, families, teachers and colleagues based on mutual respect, integrity and trust, in pursuit of meeting school goals and improving academic outcomes for ALL students.Assistant Principals supervise all individuals who carry out the programs that they are charged to lead.What you’ll doResponsibilities and Duties:Basic Components of the Job Description for the Assistant Principal position include (but are not limited to):Personal Leadership

  • Actively contribute to school’s School Leadership Team (SLT) for carrying out the strategic plan
  • Actively participate in the network’s Communities of Practice (COP) or other professional development and meetings, where relevant
  • Actively participate, and lead as necessary, school site meetings and events (examples include: culture meetings, parent nights, attendance meetings, school assemblies, etc.)
  • Extremely high standards for student academic work and student behavior – the belief that all of our students (who are primarily from low-income, educationally under-resourced families) will be able to rise to the same academic challenges and compete at the top levels with all students, regardless of family background

Team Leadership and Talent Management

  • Manage 8+ school site personnel including Deans, teachers, counselors and support staff
  • Develop Teacher Leaders to support them to lead their respective teams
  • Ensure upholding the rules and procedures as outlined in the Employee, and School handbooks
  • Help principal plan engaging, actionable, adult-learning professional development
  • Hold staff accountable for implementation of schoolwide instructional and cultural strategic plans
  • Work directly with teachers and staff to support enforcement of the schoolwide behavior management plan
  • May serve as a grade level chair, where needed
  • Support student and staff recruiting through supporting with information and orientation sessions
  • Support in the creation, change, distribution, and collection of quarterly student, teacher, and parent surveys
  • Summarize data and use it to inform school improvements
  • Assist Principal with building positive and accountable staff culture
  • Cover the Principal during Principal absence(s)
  • Plan and coordinate staff fellowship opportunities as appropriate

Instructional Leadership

  • Develop and support teacher leaders
  • Plan for and facilitate professional development and meetings for Academic Leaders (Deans), Department Leads, Grade Level Chairs and staff
  • Oversee all assessments, including ELPAC, CAASPP, College Board (PSAT, ACT, SAT, AP Exams), and District Summative/Formative Assessments such as i-Ready
  • Oversee i-Ready program implementation in all grade levels
  • Coach, mentor, and evaluate teachers per the organization’s coaching and evaluation programs
  • Oversee instruction & formative grades including standards maps, weekly plans, selection and use of texts and support materials, common assessment plans, and differentiated instruction including specialized programs for ELLs and students with special needs.
  • Coach, support, and participate in IEP meetings, triannuals, and case management meetings to support students with special needs
  • Build capacity in support of inclusive education and in developing Tier 3 support to students with individual needs, multi-language learners and other barriers
  • Oversee ELD instruction
  • Monitor timely and consistent grading practices, including monitoring grade books; verify that grades are inputted and summarized appropriately
  • Conduct formal and informal teacher evaluations
  • Develop teachers and leaders through goal setting, coaching,] providing feedback, leading professional development and PLCs
  • Lead data-driven conversations and coaching; assess teacher practice, student achievement and set goals and action steps collaboratively with teachers to meet growth goals for students
  • Leads data discussions for student sub-groups in relation to school-wide instructional vision and goals
  • Support development and implementation of network adopted curricula and instructional practices
  • Work with the Principal to create a yearlong Scope and Sequence plan for Staff Professional Development.
  • Support Principal in planning and goal setting for the grades/departments managed and ensure alignment with school-wide goals
  • Support the development of the master schedule and teacher/student schedules
  • Follow compliance protocol to support development and refinement of schedules/calendars and uphold instructional minutes requirements

Positive and Productive Student Culture Leadership

  • Manage and coordinate culture on the school campus, including school-wide behavior management systems, Restorative Practices, and support for all internal and external educational partners (ie. teacher, student, and families).
  • Develop school site team members through ongoing professional development, educational plans, and observation and feedback cycles.
  • Plan and lead quarterly cultural assemblies that advance the school toward our vision
  • Oversee the school’s After School Enrichment and Life Experience Lessons (field trips)
  • Oversee supervision of student activities including Lunchtime and After School Supervision
  • Enforce and revise the rules and procedures as outlined in the student and parent handbooks, as necessary
  • Develop proactive cultural initiatives to motivate students toward high success and achievement

What you’ll bringQualifications & ExperienceMinimum:

  • Valid, Clear, California Teaching Credential (Single Subject or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential preferred) or P.P.S. Credential
  • At least two years of experience as a teacher lead, instructional coach/mentor, lead counselor, or an administrative role
  • Valid California Administrative credential (or currently enrolled in an administrative credential program)
  • At least three years of teaching or school guidance counseling experience (middle grades preferred) with consistent student achievement and growth
  • Evidence of strong organizational, student management, and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Google Apps , plus an aptitude for quickly learning and mastering other data-based programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to quickly digest and, when needed, create documents for the school community (students, teachers, parents)
  • Ability to analyze complex student data, identify trends, and create action steps that will lead to student growth
  • Understanding of and agreement with our student, parent, and employee expectations

Desired (but not required) in order of importance: * Experience supervising other employees

  • Fluency in a second language. Willingness to learn Spanish or Korean if that isn’t the language of fluency.
  • Post-graduate degree (Masters, Administrative Credential, or MBA)
