Mount Saint Michael Academy is announcing the start of the search for the next Principal. This position will formally start on July 1, 2025. Mount Saint Michael Academy is an all-boys Roman Catholic High School, in the Marist tradition, located in the Wakefield section of the Bronx.Reporting to the President of Mount Saint Michael Academy, the next Principal of Mount Saint Michael needs to provide a strong presence throughout the school. The Principal is expected to engage with faculty and students daily in positive, creative ways that keep Catholic learning, rooted in Marist values, at the forefront for all interactions.   • Principal Job Requirements
  • Candidate must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church and believe deeply in the Marist vision.
  • Must have a passion for Catholic education and Catholic urban education.
  • Must implement Catholic doctrine throughout the school’s curricular and extra-curricular activities.
  • Must have understanding and comply with all Diocesan safe school policies.
  • Master’s degree required.
  • Ideally be familiar with Roman Catholic doctrine and Catholic curriculum for Archdiocesan schools.
  • Ideally have some managerial experience overseeing faculty and academic administration.
  • Be willing to grow in an understanding of Marist spirituality and pedagogy., including attending formation programs conducted by the Marist Brothers USA Province Office of Adult Formation.
  • Must be willing to attend programs and meetings conducted by the Marist Brothers USA Province Office of Ministries.

Principal Job DescriptionThe Principal is appointed by the President as Chief Operation Officer of the school, with primary responsibility for the day-to-day operations. Major responsibilities of this office include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Fosters the Marist Catholic Christian atmosphere and spiritual dimension of the school, especially as these pertain to those areas of responsibility appropriate to the Office of the Principal in coordination with the President.
  • Selects, hires, develops, evaluates and dismisses faculty.
  • Selects, hires, develops, evaluates and dismisses academic administrators.
  • Appoints Department Chairs, coordinates their work, meets periodically with them individually and as a group, and consults with them about teachers’ performance and teaching assignments.
  • Directs and evaluates student activities and interscholastic athletics in consultation with the Assistant Principal and the Athletic Director.
  • Supervises the general order in the school and the physical safety of all occupants in the school facilities.
  • Determines the school calendar, Faculty Bulletin, and methods of communication with parents/guardians.
  • Supervises student dismissals for academic and disciplinary reasons in consultation with the President.
  • Serves as liaison and representative of the school, with the New York State Education Department, the School office of the Archdiocese and other professional and educational organizations, and with the President, prepares reports to the School Board.
  • In conjunction with the other administrators, establishes a professional development program seeking to integrate Marist identity, faith and mission.
  • Conducts formal and informal classroom observations either personally or through delegates.
  • Reviews distribution of grades each marking period to ensure equity in grading.
  • Develops curriculum with the Assistant Principal for Academics and Department Chair.
  • Supervises the Director of Testing in the ordering, distribution and collection of state provided textbooks.
  • Oversees government-funded programs such as Title VI.
  • Coordinates new teacher orientation with the other administrators.
  • Conducts general faculty meetings.
  • Provides information in a timely fashion to the President and School Board.

Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Motivates, leads, and inspires faculty to provide the top-quality Catholic education upon which Mount Saint Michael Academy was founded by the Marist Brothers.
  • Provide a model of disciplined, erudite leadership for all faculty staff and students.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, development and retention of talented, qualified faculty.
  • Ensure familiarity and implementation of all State, Diocesan and local school policies and directives.
  • Report regularly to the president on all activities within the academic enterprise, including issues of staff discipline, attendance, and required data for informed decision making.
  • Work with the president and school counsel on all union contracts and negotiations.
  • Responsible for quarterly board reports and chair of academic committee of the School Board.
  • Ensure all faculty and staff are compliant with diocesan/Marist Brothers’ provincial safe school policies and procedures.
  • Oversee curriculum review and implementation to modernize course offerings consistent with 21st century Catholic education.
  • Must be familiar with best practices in curricular offerings and curriculum development.
  • Must have a solid grasp of state policy issues as they relate to curriculum and curriculum requirements.
  • Lead academic administration and staff through regular meeting times, professional development, and extraordinary scheduled events.
  • Oversee, supervise, and evaluate teachers and staff in conjunction with academic administration and department chairpersons.
  • Hiring and termination of faculty and administrative staff.
  • Determine internal policies with the assistance of the Administration regarding admission, transfers, and dismissal of students.
  • Oversee mid-term, final and Regents Examinations with academic assistant principal.
  • Assume the ultimate responsibility for disciplinary problems, especially those involving suspension and expulsion
  • Assume the ultimate responsibility for all athletic and extracurricular programs.
  • Coordinate the agenda for faculty meetings.
  • Responsible for overseeing the individual school departments.
  • Prepare and submit the Mandated Services ad BEDS reports for the New York State Education Department.
  • Work with assigned staff on all state grants application and processes.
  • Oversee the process of academic assessment of the students.
  • Coordinate the School calendar.
  • Oversee emergency situations/school closing.
